- Just realised that I will be on a train next week when the final episode of Spooks is being broadcast. DISASTER. So most of next Monday will be spent dodging spoilers. Am slightly terrified of what might happen: "rocks fall, everybody dies" is a distinct possibility, I feel. Anyway, I will probably cry as I have been watching this ridiculous program for over a third of my life now. Re. last night's episode: spoilers )

- People of the internet! Can anyone recommend me any superhero films with female leads? I was reading SFX's top 50 superhero films poll results the other day and it contained only one female led film (Supergirl, at number 37), which made me sad. But then I tried to think of things that should've been in there and couldn't, which made me even sadder. (NB I haven't seen Electra or Catwoman, so can't judge if their exclusion was a) unjust or b) reasonable.) Surely there are some out there?

- There ought to be a third thing, but I can't think of one.

Spooks!

Spoooooks! It is BACK. (I was going to betray it by watching Downton Abbey live, since I can't watch one channel and record another at the same time, and the iPlayer >>>>> the ITV Player, but my digibox has stopped working again so streaming Spooks it is.)

A belated happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] hoshinekoyasha, and a very belated happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] ghost2! Hope you both had lovely days.

Sorry, have been rather absent recently, due to feeling a bit hide-under-the-desk-y. I've been reading and thinking of comments and then... not actually leaving them. Whoops. Will try and be better in future! Also, I went away for the weekend. Well, to Cheltenham, where I met up with Izzy, Jess and Vanky and we all went to see the Everyman Youth Theatre's production of Carpe Jugulum. It was a lot of fun, and one of the Nanny Oggs (the cast was huge, so halfway through a lot of the extras became main characters and vice versa) in particular was smashing. ("We'll all be killed in each other's beds!") Both the Oatses were really good, too, and changing the actor actually worked in terms of his characterisation. It was in the studio theatre, and we sat right at the front, which is a little alarming as I worry that the actors can see me and that I therefore have to make appropriate faces. Also once when I sat at the front I got jenga bricks kicked all over me. Anyway. It made me want to go home and reread all my Discworld books, but they wouldn't fit in my rucksack so I settled for just A Hat Full of Sky, as I bought that one just after the last Great Discworld Reread.

And then I came back to Bristol, baked a cake and watched Giles and Sue Live the Good Life, which was a delightful farrago of incompetence, innuendo and cosplay, and I am looking forward to part two tonight.

My restore-from-saved-draft was some stuff about Spooks, which is no longer terribly timely, but I shall finish and post it anyway. spoilers )

Two posts in quick succession, oops. I didn't think I had anything to say about this week's Spooks, but it turns out I do.

spoilers )

Also I have started to watch Bones, despite a slight hitch whereby lovefilm sent me Shutter Island instead. I'm not that interested in the actual plots, as a general rule, but I do like... well, everything you would expect me to like about it, really. The team dynamics! The Angela/Brennan friendship! Booth and Brennan snarking at each other! Brennan's unapologetic weirdness! The sappy bits! (I actually said "aw!" out loud at the Christmas episode. And then I cried a bit at the end.) Dr Goodman! He is really great, I like how he is actually just as weird and dorky as the rest of them, just better at hiding it for people who aren't.

I read on the internets that it all goes a bit wrong after season three, is that right? Even if it does, three seasons of goodness is a fair amount.

The good thing about working late on Monday evenings is that I can come home and collapse in front of the telly without any guilt about how I should be studying. Also it turns out wine makes me better at University Challenge. This is a useful fact to know.

SJA! spoilers )

1) I don't know how many of you read the library comic Unshelved, but they have just introduced a new character called Elsie (points at icon) and I want to be her when I grow up. And since she is a cataloguer who brandishes her knitting when she is annoyed... I feel I have made a good start. (ETA: as [livejournal.com profile] nentari and [livejournal.com profile] hhertzof pointed out, she isn't actually new, we just haven't seen her for a while. Should've done more research before I posted...)

2) I finally caught up with SJA! "The Nightmare Man" made my heart all squishy. spoilers ) And then there was the first part of "The Vault of Secrets", which I did not love quite so much, but did some things I really liked. May say more about that after part two.

3) Also Spooks happened! more spoilers )

2) SJA was aces as ever, might talk about it properly after I have seen both parts, but I don't know when that will be as am off to London this afternoon to see the preview screening of the episode with the spoilertastic title, with [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo, [livejournal.com profile] carawj and [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin :DDDDD

- Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] invisigoth51 and [livejournal.com profile] ravenskyewalker!

- OH SPOOKS. spoilers )

- I redid my dreamwidth layout! [personal profile] usuallyhats I got the theme from here and then fiddled a few bits and pieces: colours, text size, getting the mood theme pictures to display. I kind of miss having a header, but other than that I really like it.

1) Happy birthday, [personal profile] cosmic_celery!

2) It's Spooks time of year again! I thought I would try a liveblog type thing, unfortunately this means that the internet is at my fingertips and I am therefore not concentrating on the actual episode quite so much as I might have been. OH WELL.

- Via io9, via [profile] hhertzof in Google Reader: Lovelace and Babbage: Together, They Fight Crime! Includes Wolverine!Brunel. ♥ The notes are also really interesting and fun to read, and occasionally say things like this:

The Difference Engine prints large tables of numbers without error. If that is not cool enough for you, you are reading the wrong comic my friends. It does battle vampires at some point but it has its own way of doing that thank you very much.

There is swag, too, and I am trying to decide whether spending about £20 on this t-shirt is a) ridiculous or b) sensible: I usually buy all my clothes in charity shops so my perspective on what is good value is a little skewed.

- My parents emailed me this v. silly video of sheep, which made me laugh a great deal.

- The Miserable Life of Tom Quinn, Spy. Being The Tragic Story of the Third Saddest Spy in the History of the World. By A Lady.

- HOME TEAM 2009: ROUND TWO. Everyone go and vote for your favourites! Round one was full of AGONISING CHOICES but I found this one a bit easier. Am v. sad that Kira is losing to Daria though: yes, Daria is awesome, but ...Kira! Also I still lament the fact that Wendy Watson went out in round one. :(

I've seen the first three episodes so far - I think 7x04 has aired on BBC3 but it didn't seem to be on t'iplayer so I have not watched it yet. Anyway here is a long and rambly reaction post for episodes 7x01-7x03. (We are on season 7, right? I think we are but it seems like an awful lot.)

- This was emailed round at work and it's too fab not to share: gorgeous pictures of libraries. DO WANT, especially the Rijkmuseum Library in Amsterdam. I could totally learn Dutch and move there, right? Right?

- Someone posted this on [livejournal.com profile] spooky_doings; BBC Autumn preview trailer (UK only, I believe, sorry). Lots of goodness: Spooks itself (HARRY! Also a couple of casting spoilers, both of which I knew, one that is yaysness and one that I'm reserving judgement on ); Merlin, the Beeb's new Arthurian drama thing - it looks to be glossy and ridiculous and I plan to watch it all; Little Dorrit (FREEMA!), of course they had to pick one of the Dickenseseses that I haven't read yet, but oh well; Tess of the d'Urbervilles which is looking suitably melodramatic (I hope they have kept the bit where the fire leaps up suddenly and then it fades away and there is Alec standing on the other side, lol subtle, that are my favourite bit); Survivors (MOAR FREEMA), it's hard to tell from just that little bit but it looks cool; Apparitions, the new series by Joe Aherne, who created Ultraviolet (the telly series); plus lots of things wot I am rather less interested in.

- I thought I didn't have any Torchwood squee left, but I heard the trailer for the radio thingummy last night and my brain went YAY!!1!!1 so apparently I do, hurrah.

- Inspired by SFX's Sarah Connor Chronicles article I have boughteded the first season offa ebay so can finally see the last five episodes (the (late lamented) digibox got me to episode 4 before going, "nah, bored of this channel now, go and watch Dave instead"). Feel I have successfully defied THE MAN as I have not bought it new which would have meant tacitly accepting that it's a-ok to release stuff in the UK minus all the extras the US release has, oh yes, and for twice the price too. This happens a lot and it is very irritating, quite often it stops me buying things that I would otherwise have got. Bah. End rant.

- Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] darthcorrie!
