- Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] invisigoth51 and [livejournal.com profile] ravenskyewalker!

- OH SPOOKS. spoilers )

- I redid my dreamwidth layout! [personal profile] usuallyhats I got the theme from here and then fiddled a few bits and pieces: colours, text size, getting the mood theme pictures to display. I kind of miss having a header, but other than that I really like it.

[community profile] doctorwho is having a friending meme! On a related note, I have tons of Dreamwidth invite codes if anyone should want one. I also have one invite for AO3 - if you want it, give me a shout!

1.) I redid my journal layout! [personal profile] usuallyhats I had it all sorted out and looking the way I wanted with Firefox, then I thought "since I have IE open too I will just check it there" and lo it looked AWFUL and I had to start again. FROWN. (Do give me a shout if it looks broken for you and I shall cry try and sort it out.) (Oh, it looks a bit wrong in the preview thing due to lack of that bar on the top. Hopef. this is only a problem for me.)

2.) (I meant to post this last Friday but I was ill and spent most of the day in bed listening to Big Finish and feeling sorry for myself. Anyway.) So in my Dreamwidth poll post on LJ [personal profile] brewsternorth told me about [community profile] followfriday and [personal profile] vilakins asked for dreamwidth community recs, so I am hereby combining the two:
  • [community profile] shes_awesome (recced by [personal profile] azarsuerte in the same post; thank you!): a community for posting about awesome women being awesome, an endeavour of which I heartily approve.

  • [community profile] hooked_on_heroines: the posting rate has died down slightly after the initial flurry, but this community is still full of interesting, thinky posts on women in fiction, with good discussions in the comments.

  • [community profile] fem_thoughts is having a mini-meta fest; there's some great-looking prompts!

  • [community profile] access_fandom always has excellent links and posts, with lots of things to think about.

3) Doctor Who friending/subscription meme on Dreamwidth! Yay!

4) I would like to do something for [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw but cannot think what. Thus, a relevant meme: What kind of topics/entries would you like to see me posting about? Any particular questions you've always wanted to ask me but have resisted because the answer would be a huge essay? Ever want to wind me up and watch me go on a particular topic? Anything you've heard me say "I should write that entry about _________ I've been meaning to write" and have been patiently waiting for?

Recently I have been sort of vaguely moving towards making Dreamwidth my primary online home, since they keep doing things I like, and since LJ keeps doing things that vaguely irritate me. I've got no plans to leave LJ or stop crossposting, though! And I'm also not planning to consolidate comments at the moment, though that may change. With all of that in mind, here is a poll! I have never created a poll before so it is possible that I may have made a frantic bish of it. Please do shout at me if so.

1.) Thank you to the lovely anonymous person who bought me a month of paid time! I don't know who you are, but I know you are GREAT. ♥

2.) I watched Strange Days last night, on [livejournal.com profile] the_smut_fairy's recommenedation, and it was very good. I wasn't sure at first that it was going to be my sort of thing, but I was wrong. The more I watched, the more invested I got in the characters - I don't think I have ever hoped so desperately for a film to have a happy ending before. and now I shall cut for spoilers )

3.) Music meme, from [livejournal.com profile] hhertzof:

Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING! Also, might not even work for some of these.

1) Happy birthday to [personal profile] bubbles83 for tomorrow!

2.) Between the library move and being at my parents' for Easter, have not been around much recently, and since I am away again next weekend this is not likely to change; if there's anything from the last week or so or in the next week or so that you think I should/would like to see, leave me a link! ♥

3.) I think Dreamwidth may have been looking through my brain for ideas for their new features; now if you click on someone's icon it takes you straight to their userpics page, and the drafts saving feature now saves subject lines etc too. I like!

4.) Sign I have possibly been watching too much Leverage: I found myself in the hat department at TK Maxx and the first thought I had went: "ooo, that looks like a hat that Nate would wear. I should TOTALLY buy it." I did not in fact buy it, so there may be hope for me yet.

5.) Also in the watching things department, "The Eleventh Hour"! I liked it a lot, though there was one thing I didn't like. all thoughts under here, with spoilers )

5b.) My sister, this weekend, on New Who as a whole: "They have spent too much money on effects and not enough money on QUARRIES." ...I cannot fault her logic.
usuallyhats: Eighth Doctor, Fitz and Anji; text reads: "time and space adventurers" (time and space adventurers)
I went to see A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Tobacco Factory on Friday! I was a little worried about how it would compare with the fantastic outdoor production I saw last summer, but I needn't have been - although it didn't have the acres of energy that that one did, it was still an excellent production. It was a little slow to start, but I think that's just how the play is (all that setup business at the beginning can drag a tad), and it picked up quickly. The fairies' lullaby was genuinely creepy and rather magical, and the second half was amazing. I was in stitches at the play within a play, especially the Wall. Titania's dress was lovely, sadly I can't find a decent picture of it online (*shakes fist at the internets*) but it was big and red and came with an armoured shrug, heh. And I really liked their Helena, which is good because I can usually take or leave her. Also, apparently I am so used to seeing productions with female Pucks that I'm more surprised when the character's played by a man now!

I went back to Cheltenham for a flying visit at the weekend, it being Mother's Day and The Sister being there. I came last at scrabble but won Trivial Pursuits so overall the game situation was neutral.

Something I like about Dreamwidth, randomly: when you click on "x comments" it actually takes you to the comments, rather than to the top of the post. It's always annoyed me that LJ doesn't do that.

1.) Happy International Women's Day, everyone! Was quite nice to wake up to the news that Kathryn Bigelow has won an Oscar, I have not seen her film but then I have not seen any of the others either and it is about time a woman won Best Director. Also there is a program about feminism on BBC4 tonight that I shall definitely be watching (first in a series, I think). OK, I am going to a pub quiz tonight (hurray!) and can't get BBC4 anyway (when is the digital switchover happening? I know it is ANY DAY NOW but can't remember exactly when. *googles* Aha, 24th March) so I shall be iplayering it at a later date, but the principle is the same.

2.) OH LIVEJOURNAL NO. Why do they keep doing these things? Even without the bit where the code accidentally stripped other people's affiliate IDs and replaced them with the LJ one, this was never going to end well. In related news, I have three Dreamwidth invite codes if anyone wants one.

3.) This is the part where I talk about Leverage some more! (Up to 2x09 now, please don't spoil me!) Sorry to everyone who is not watching it (though you SHOULD be because it is LOVELIER THAN KITTENS). I took notes for the first half of 2x01 but not any of the others, so if I seem to say more about that one that is why.

spoilers. Warning for capslock, also overuse of the word 'love' and its derivatives. )

2.) Also I watched Law and Order: UK and Ping-Cho from Marco Polo was in it! I love TV.

3.) Changed my layout last night: [personal profile] shinyjenni. I didn't really do much other than use one of their standard ones, but I did fiddle with some of the colours and bump up the text size a bit to make it readable. I wish I knew enough CSS to code a layout from scratch!

1) I have a spare hardcopy of Vortexxxxxxx magazine to give away if anyone wants it - Big Finish sent my copies of The Mahogany Murders and Enemy of the Daleks in separate envelopes this month, for some obscure reason.

2) Is there an easy way to code Dreamwidth usernames into Livejournal posts? I have a method, but it involves an awful lot of code and copy 'n' pasting, and I'm sure there must be an easier way!

3) I finished Reckless Engineering last night! I thoroughly enjoyed it and sat up rather later than I should have to read it. Quick thoughts: spoilers )

Eurovision was great this year. And by great I mean I won both the sweetstakes. Hurrah! Also Hett, Rach, Mark and I had a lovely Eurovision party with lots of European and Europeanish food, dancing around, flag making and enthusiastic waving (the red felt tips ran out so my Icelandic flag had to have a pink cross instead of a red one, but it looked pretty so never mind), and VERY TENSE voting: no-one had Norway but I had Iceland and Rach had Azerbaijan, and they fought it out for second place right up until the very last vote. As for the actual songs, I liked Norway's entry but it didn't stand out as one that would DEFINITELY WIN, so I was a bit surprised by the landslide. I was also surprised at how well our entry did: it wasn't bad, but it was a bit bland. The lyrics weren't terribly interesting and neither was the staging (apart from the bit where she got too close to a violinist and almost ended up with an elbow in the face, but I don't think that was planned. Well done her for not being put off by it, though). In the "why didn't they do better category?" are Portugal (so colourful and happy!), Germany (come on, they had SHINY TROUSERS and DITA VON TEESE, awesome) and Ukraine (anti-crisis girl! Dancers dressed as centurions (Roman, not Battlestar Galactica)!).

I have been watching a lot of Red Dwarf recently, finally getting round to catching up on the seasons that I never saw on TV. Also it turned out that Hetty had just borrowed the DVDs from a friend since she'd never seen them, so we watched seasons three and four at the weekend. Although I hadn't seen any of the episodes except 'Polymorph' all the way through, I'd seen lots of clips and picked things up via fannish osmosis, not to mention reading both script books and some of the novels many many times, so it was a strange mix of new and familiar. Anyway, all v. funny - I think my favourite episode so far is 'Marooned' - and I may end up buying the rest of the DVDs instead of renting them. (Er. Also, have I gone completely mad or is Chris Barrie really very sexy? Answers on a postcard!)

Hetty also lent me Moonlight (ever since I introduced her to Buffy last year she has been all about the vampire dramas). I am three episodes in and enjoying it, though I wish they'd swapped the genders of the leads. I always think that but Moonlight in particular would have benefited - it would have made the bits of it that are rather generic much more interesting. I do like that spoilers! )

Really not very happy about The Sarah Connor Chronicles getting cancelled - when I heard Dollhouse had been renewed it got my hopes up because I thought that surely the universe was not so unfair as to renew the latter but not the former. Apparently I was wrong. D:

Oh, nearly forgot: I have two spare Dreamwidth codes if anyone wants one (or knows someone who wants one).

This last is still ongoing, so if you look at it and it's all wossname, that probably means that I'm sitting at my laptop going "AHHHHH!" and trying to undo whatever it is I've just done. I have no invite codes at present, but if I get any I shall offer them around here. And I shouldn't think I'll be leaving LJ, but I might crosspost.

Hurrah, bank holiday weekend! I keep forgetting I have Monday off; hopefully this will not lead to me accidentally going to work on Monday, that would be rubbish.
