This month I found out that I am in fact eligible to nominate for the Hugos this year, so I tried to read a lot of stuff that I might potentially want to nominate. I don't know if it was the pressure, or if I made bad choices, or if I'm in another book slump, but it went... poorly. I feel bad that all these reviews are so negative, but here we are.

Clockwork Boys (three stars), The Wonder Engine (two stars), Witchmark (three stars) )

Didn't finish: The Queen of Ieflaria - Effie Calvin, The Poppy War - RF Kuang, Elysium Fire - Alastair Reynolds )

I feel like I might have finished all three of these if I hadn't forgotten how to like books again. :/

I came into this month in a terrible book slump, feeling like it had been ages since I'd really loved or been engrossed by a book*. This hit something of a peak with The Covert Captain, which I really wanted to love but really didn't (see below), so I spent quite a lot of this month hiding in early nineties Doctor Who short stories, on the grounds that I wasn't expecting to have any reaction to them stronger than "well, that was entirely fine".

But then Doctor Who came through for me, as it so often does: Decalog 2 had two unexpectedly charming stories that made me feel like maybe I do know how to enjoy books after all. "Where The Heart Is" by Andy Lane was a lovely little slice of UNIT era goodness (Jo rescued the Doctor! The Doctor told the Brig that he does actually respect him! The Brig stole the last vol-au-vent off Yates's plate!), and "Timeshare" by Vanessa Bishop somehow managed to be a delight despite committing the two standard sins of Six and Peri stories (hewing towards the meaner end of their relationship and harping on Six's size). Good work both, much appreciated.

*Not necessarily the same thing; I'm still not sure how I feel about Too Like the Lightning, but it certainly gripped me.

This gets its own cut, because I want to talk about something in the last 20% of the book, and I can't be bothered to find the code for the spoiler bars. not actually that spoilery, I don't think? ) So overall I'm not sure what I thought of it - some of it I definitely loved, other stuff not so much.

I don't usually make New Year's resolutions for various reasons, but this year I thought I'd give setting myself some concrete, accountable goals a try, not least because I am great at procrastinating on things I actually want to do. Also I need your help with one of them. :D?

1) Finish watching Orphan Black. It's right there on Netflix, self, what are you waiting for? (I've started on this one already, it's a good time.)

2) Listen to at least six new-to-me Big Finish audios.

3) Read at least ten things from my owned-unread tag on Goodreads. (In practice this probably means I'll be cracking on with the New Adventures. What could possibly go wrong.)

4) Finish at least one creative project a month. (This is the one I'm most wary of making an actual goal - I make things because it's fun and I don't want it to feel like a duty, but I am also PARTICULARLY good at procrastinating on this sort of thing.)

5) Listen to at least one new-to-me album a month. And this is where I'm looking for help! Rec me your favourite albums so I have somewhere to start?

November and October were v busy this year for some reason, and as a result I a) failed to post an October roundup and b) didn't actually have anything to say about any of these. (I did have some complaining about The Galaxy Game, but I decided it was a bit unfair since it essentially boiled down to "I thought this was a standalone but actually it was a sequel to a book I noped out of early on, and thus I was confused and lost all the way through". (I do think I would have been less confused with stronger characters, whose actions and reactions I could have used to anchor myself, though. I really enjoy doing that.)

So this is just a list of things I read in October and November, mostly out of completism on my part, but if anyone wants to talk to me about anything on here, please do! (I really liked almost all of these, fyi.)

(Further note: I wrote this whole thing out a week ago and am only just now getting round to posting it, because I am a disaster.)
