Here are some thoughts about comics and comics based films and whatnot.

Fearless Defenders #6: spoilers )

Young Avengers #7&8: this comic is just so fun! (SMOOOOOOCH. :D) It has so much energy and willingness to be a bit silly. not really spoilers but cutting anyway just in case )

Red Sonja #1: I basically bought this for the gorgeous Fiona Staples cover, and consider it a major achievement that I made it back to work without getting run over, given the amount of time I spent staring at it. ♥ Anyway, I liked the comic itself a lot too: it was fun, and rather Xena-ish. I probably won't keep buying it, because it's expensive and I'm sorry but I just CANNOT get past the chainmail bikini issue, but I might get the trade.

Li'l Gotham #15: Batman and Robin go to Comic Con and it is AMAZING. I laughed! And then I cried a bit. This comic is so wonderful.

Smallville #56: Speaking of wonderful things... I started reading this again because Wonder Woman, and based on this issue I think I made the right choice. Great, intriguing introduction for Smallville!Wondy.

In other comics news, DC's next film is going to be Batman/Superman. Sigh. Aside from the lack-of-Wonder-Woman issue - which is NOT MINOR - this depresses me because WB seem to be too timid to actually do anything with the vast stable of rich, interesting characters they have to play with. A Justice League film is all well and good (at least it might mean Wonder Woman on the big screen, right?), but Marvel's kind of already got the shared cinematic universe team movie thing sewn up. Whatever DC does with Justice League, it'll be compared to The Avengers, and it'd have to be pretty special to win that fight. Plus, DC's not exactly starting from a strong position here: they have Man of Steel, but Green Lantern flopped and Nolan's Batverse doesn't exactly play well with others. I'd love to see DC going down a different route and trying to make films that can't be dismissed as " just another superhero movie". A Question film (pref Renee Montoya, obvs). Gotham Central (possibly better as a TV series?). Spoiler. Checkmate. Batwoman: Elegy could make a great film. A shared universe Oracle film would be amazing, though it might need a lot of adapting (ooh, maybe it could be combined with a Cass film - she rescues Babs, Babs steps up and uses her librarian powers to help Cass with the word bits of crime fighting, discovers she is REALLY GOOD AT IT etc). I would LOVE to see a Nightrunner film, in French, with subtitles. And so on. Basically none of these are ever going to happen, because they wouldn't be massive smash hit blockbusters, but done right... wouldn't they be great?

And meanwhile, Marvel still hasn't announced a Black Widow film, or a Captain Marvel one, or a Black Panther one, etc etc etc. *taps watch impatiently*

- Doctor Who: I really loved "The Rings of Akhaten", but I am not posting about it because for some reason it affected me to the point where I can't read criticism of it without getting sad, even if the rational part of my brain is going "that's actually a good point", so. Instead I shall just go and poke ebay for Clara cosplay type stuff instead.

- Registrations for [community profile] vidukon_cardiff (both attending and supporting) close this weekend! If you're on the fence about whether to go or not, I really recommend it, it's a fun con.

- I have reached the point in my somewhat delayed Babylon 5 rewatch where I'm not sure which episodes I've seen before and which episodes I just know a lot about (early season two). IT IS CONFUSING. Mostly my feelings on it are IVANOVA I LOVE YOU; it's nice to know I haven't changed that much since I was 15.

- Dissertation is SO CLOSE to being finished. I wrote a draft of the abstract at the weekend. By "wrote it at the weekend" I mean I procrastinated until 8.15 on Sunday evening and then knocked it up in about twenty minutes. OH SELF. My flat is fairly clean now though, I even did that thing where you attach a duster to the end of the broom and de-cobweb the ceilings. So that's something.

What is going on at DC at the moment? It looks like nothing but chaos and bad decisions over there. (I have successfully distanced myself from the reboot to the extent that whenever I see something referencing the events of Batman Incorporated #8 I feel this weird dislocation: "oh, yeah, that actually happened, didn't it"? Sigh.) Also, look at this awesome Young Justice-type team up we could have had! Seven awesome characters, four of whom are women and four of whom aren't white! And it sounds like it would have been pretty great. (Arrowette! :DDD) Stupid DC.

Onto comics I AM reading...

Fearless Defenders #2: not really any spoilers )

Saga #11: spoilers )

Marvel #1s are still trickling into my Comixology account! I am not going to review them all, because there are a lot and mostly it would just be me going "this was fine but I'm probably not going to read any more" over and over again, but here are some I had more to say on:

Avengers Academy #1: I was fairly meh on this: I didn't really connect with most of the characters, and it had a bit too much "the world is TERRIBLE, people will betray you" for me. But I liked Finesse an awful lot, so I've ordered the first trade from the library. We shall see.

Ant-Man and the Wasp #1: I got this thinking Janet Van Dyne would be in it. SHE WAS NOT. Hank was calling himself Wasp in her memory, and there was a new Ant-Man, and he was the WORST. Sleazy and skeevy and self-satisfied and ugh. Also there was Tigra who wears only a bikini because EMPOWERMENT, I assume.

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes #1: REALLY needs more women, but otherwise, very cute, especially Wasp! I will get round to watching the TV version eventually... ooo, look, Lovefilm has some of it! That'll make me get round to it faster.

1) Have decamped to The Parents' house for Christmas! As a result, I may not be around that much over the next week or so, what with all the lounging around drinking tea and playing games I need to do. If there's anything you think I should see/comment on, give me a shout!

2) Vid rec! Can't Go Back Now (BTVS) by [personal profile] such_heights is a really lovely character study of Willow in seasons 1-4. ♥

3) It's really time I accepted that my resolution not to get embroiled in any ongoing comics has been broken: I've been buying Saga for a while (SO GOOD), and Li'l Gotham (SO ADORABLE), and I've just bought Hawkeye #6, which was ace, so I'll probably start getting that too. And if I'm getting that, I might as well investigate getting Captain Marvel too, right? Also, is anyone reading Amethyst Sword of Sorcery? It looks vaguely like the sort of thing I'd like, and I'm pro comics with female leads and writers, but on the other hand, it does mean giving DC money for a new 52 title, and I haven't seen anything that's made me go "MUST READ THIS NOW" yet. Hmm.

Dark Reign: Young Avengers
Teen Titans/Outsiders: Insiders
Bruce Wayne: Fugitive Vol 1
Bruce Wayne: Fugitive Vol 2
Bruce Wayne: Fugitive Vol 3
Green Arrow: Year One

Injustice League started off very nicely by making me laugh at Oliver Queen's bachelor party ("How could you possibly know that?"/"I'm Batman.") but descended into a fairly by the numbers punch-up. It also included a couple of one off issues, one of which introduced an alternate universe female Flash (yay!), who was sadly dressed like this. (Linked image possibly not safe for work. /o\) REALLY? *sigh* New Maps of Hell also started strongly, and made me really like Clark, who I can usually take or leave (Lois was great too! I always like her), and pretty much stayed good throughout. It also had a great role for Oracle, hurray! If only she still existed.

X-23's is a darker universe than I usually like, but I enjoyed Laura's characterisation and her relationships with the other characters, especially Jubilee. (HOWEVER. I picked this volume up when I was in the library, assuming that because it was marked as volume two, it would follow directly on from the one I've already read, which was volume one. Not so much! Also, as it turns out, the volume one I read wasn't the first volume one. That would be too easy. COMICS. *shakes fist*)

Blue Beetle = EPIC SPARKLY LOVE. I was overwhelmed with delight with these two trades, not least because they were HILARIOUS. Seriously, everyone who follows me on twitter should count themselves lucky that my laptop was switched off when I read it, because otherwise I would've tweeted basically every other line. ♥ ♥ ♥

Dark Reign: Young Avengers and Teen Titans/Outsiders: Insiders I think both suffered from being read in isolation - I am assuming that there was more build-up/context for both of them which I haven't read. While I quite enjoyed reading them, I was left feeling a bit "well... that happened" about them. I liked the fact that most of the powerhouses of the Titans AND the Outsiders were women: Wonder Girl, Starfire, Thunder, Grace etc. And I always enjoy a comic where Dick's motivations can be interpreted as "overwhelmed with feelings". (See also: Gotham Knights.) I still don't understand Raven, though.

I enjoyed the Bruce Wayne: Murderer/Fugitive (I read Murderer a while ago) arc very much, despite not really caring overmuch about Bruce. (The few longueurs definitely coincided for me with the bits where I was supposed to be v. interested in his pain.) There was a lot of focus on the importance of his family, which I loved - seeing everyone's shocked faces in Vol 2 when he started talking about his feelings was worth the price of admission - and I loved that it specifically called out the "'Bruce Wayne' is just a mask" attitude as wrong and unhealthy. The "day in the life" issue I liked a lot, partially for the same reason - it shows Bruce doing good as Bruce, as well as as Batman. I was of course not happy that Vesper had to die to provoke this feelings crisis, but I liked that at one point Bruce actually acknowledges that she's the victim and that that's getting lost. Since I loved Checkmate it was great to see some more of Sasha, though I didn't love how the Batfamily more or less forgot about her. (Apart from Alfred. ALFRED IS THE ACTUAL BEST.) Oh, and one little thing: I was pleased to see Spoiler listed as a member of the Batfamily in the "previously..." blurbs at the beginning of each volume, even the ones she didn't actually appear in. ♥

I was and remain completely neutral on Oliver Queen, but a few niggles notwithstanding I thoroughly enjoyed Green Arrow: Year One. Very well written with great art - not something I'm usually good at noticing, but it was particularly good here.

In other comics news, [tumblr.com profile] operationbatgirlinc is having a Cass month! REBLOG ALL THE THINGS.
usuallyhats: The cast of Critical Role sitting round a table playing Dungeons and Dragons (wonder woman)
1) Trailer for the animated Dark Knight Returns (part 1)! I wasn't exactly excited about this when I first heard about it, because I dimly remember not being that thrilled by The Dark Knight Returns when I read it about a decade ago, but this trailer has got me enthused by being mostly focused on Carrie Kelly. A girl Robin that Batman describes as "perfect"? YES PLEASE.

2) Some comics I have read recently:
  • Power Girl: Old Friends: I thought this series wasn't nearly as good after the Gray/Palmiotti/Conner team left, but it picked up a bit towards the end and I really liked the last two issues. (Also, I really loved the Gray/Palmiotti/Conner run, so "not as good as that" is not as damning as it sounds.) The penultimate issue was slightly obvious in its "yay girl power!" stuff, but its heart was in the right place, and I loved that there was a bit of diversity of body shape and ethnicity amongst the Power Girl cosplayers. And the scene where the main fangirl character got to the front of the queue and started off into a whole speech about what PG meant to her, only to get in a muddle and tail off with "...I forgot what I was going to say" was adorable. The last issue was a great showcase of what Power Girl can do, and I laughed a lot at this exchange between her and the villain: "Do you know what most vulnerable part of the body is?"/"...er, the heart?"/"No, you idiot, the back of the knee." *kicks* As closing lines go, "We have all the time in the world" is a bit clichĆ©d, and it's not a patch on "it's only the end if you want it to be", but still, sadness. One thing I did really like about the art was how physically imposing Power Girl is; I've only seen scans of World's Finest, but that seems to be less the case there, which makes me sad.

  • Batman: Cataclysm was a bit of a slog, to be honest, though I did enjoy a) finding out that the Drakes apparently lived next door to Wayne Manor (!) and Tim had a secret tunnel to allow him to sneak out for Robining purposes (!!), and b) Dick Grayson running through Bludhaven, tearing his clothes off as he went, hee. I did feel it needed more hugs, overall. But I did enjoy the Huntress/Spoiler team-up, which is what I was reading it for, so that was ok. I liked that even in just one issue, there was space for their relationship to be fairly complicated - some things they had in common, some things they clashed over - and am now even sadder that neither character is around any more. :(

  • I've also been (slowly) catching up with Greg Rucka's run on Wonder Woman, which is just as amazing as I'd heard. I love Wonder Woman so much: her strength, her serenity, her clear-eyed compassion and her determination to do the right thing, whatever the personal cost. ♥

3) Still working on reading all the Booker and Orange prize winners. Had some trouble with 1999's Booker winner, Disgrace, since I entirely loathed the protagonist. I think I was meant to dislike him, but it's hard to read something when you just keep thinking "go away, go away, GO AWAY" at the point of view character. Amsterdam, the 1998 winner, I enjoyed a bit more, but it was let down by the preposterous ending. The closer I got to the end of the book, the more I thought "oh no, that can't be where this is going, that would just be TOO STUPID", but indeed it was where it was going. Shouldn't there be some kind of minimum plausibility standard for prize-winning realist fiction?

The 1998 Orange Prize winner, Larry's Party, was much better. It was full of warmth and affection, and it made all the characters seem like people in their own right, not just cut-outs orbiting the protagonist. It also helped that it didn't treat Larry's life as being Fraught With Special Meaning And Importance: his life is meaningful and important, yes, but only because everyone's is.

4) My things from the library pile includes a lot of Shakespeare-related books at the moment, inspired by reading James Shapiro's excellent Contested Will. The only one I've managed to read so far is The Lodger: Shakespeare on Silver Street, which does a great job of taking a lot of small pieces of evidence and using them to build up a convincing picture of the milieu Shakespeare might have inhabited.
usuallyhats: The cast of Critical Role sitting round a table playing Dungeons and Dragons (here we go)
Read "Bruce Wayne: The Road Home" last night! ...I don't think I was fully prepared for the reality of a book based around a recently back from the dead being lost-in-time Bruce Wayne lurking creepily around Gotham judging all his friends. D: (To quote an old children's radio play: "you've been back from the dead for five minutes and already I'm fed up with you.") But I was mostly reading it for the Batgirl bit and that was a DELIGHT, so. Quality Oracle and Steph snark! Setting up those brilliant pages from Batgirl #15 where Steph explains the Batfamily! And of course the glorious moment where Steph finds out what Bruce is up to, and slaps him in the face. YES. And then panics and runs away, but I can't really blame her for that. Especially since she then comes BACK and tells him off for how he treated her when she was Spoiler and Robin, and tells him that she's not going to let him take being Batgirl away from her. YESSSSSS. I kind of hate the bit on the next page, though, where Bruce explains that Steph being Batgirl was ~his plan all along~, ugh. I'm torn between being glad she didn't hear that, and wishing she had, so she could hit him again. And then call Cass, because their friendship is the BEST and I miss it. I've read quite a few of the Cass!Batgirl issues with Spoiler in them recently, and I love them SO MUCH. Especially when they hang out with Oracle. Babs-Cass-Steph team ups forever, please. TEAM BATGIRL.

Speaking of Steph, I am ridiculously upset about her being dropped from the Smallville comics. Not least because it's really dented my love for them. :( I was really looking forward to the Detective arc, and now I don't think I'm going to bother with it. (Not boycotting Smallville altogether! Just skipping that arc, because I don't want to spend money on stuff that will make me unhappy.)

In other comics related news, very disappointed that none of Marvel's recently announced films are about Black Widow. Or Monica Rambeau. Or any of the other Marvel women. SIGH. The worst part is, I'm not really surprised, either.

Well. This post got grumpier than I expected. Non-grumpily, [livejournal.com profile] ds9_rewatch have got to season four, which is where my own rewatch had got to, so I have jumped back in! I'm pretty bad at actually saying much in the chats, due to my general failings, but they're still really fun. Next up is "Little Green Men", I believe!
usuallyhats: The cast of Critical Role sitting round a table playing Dungeons and Dragons (here we go)
1) Last night I read this post about DCU heroines who deserve their own films, and now I want to move to the alternate universe where there's a Birds of Prey film that was done in the same way as the Avengers was in this universe. IT WOULD BE SO GREAT. There'd be individual films for the Birds, starting with Black Canary, and Oracle would have the Nick Fury cameo role... why can't we have this? Why? Not to mention the "Batgirl and Spoiler" idea, YES PLEASE. I've just ordered the two volumes of Batgirl that Spoiler appears in (due to some bitterness over Cass being described as "one of several former (and temporary) Batgirls", TEMPORARY BATGIRL MY FOOT), and I am ridiculously excited about them.

2) Speaking of comics-related things I am overexcited about, a spoiler for the Smallville comics, which probably doesn't need to be cut as it's all over the place, but just to be on the safe side )

3) In between flailing about comics, I have been writing the research proposal for my dissertation (due in today). D: IT IS THE WORST. (It is probably not the worst.)

- It is the MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. By which I mean it is [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking time! My stocking is here; let me know where yours are! ♥

- Haven't been posting very much recently; this is because I have an assignment due in next Wednesday and my response to stress is basically "hide in a corner; bite anyone who tries to talk to me". Which is not ideal, especially as I have to go to work every day, an arena where biting is generally discouraged.

- My local library was closed for TWO WHOLE WEEKS. It was terrible. But now it is open again and they had books for me! As a result I finished 52: Volume 3 last night, which I liked more than the previous volumes because it had a) lots more Batfamily-action and b) Christmas. Also it almost made me cry a couple of times.

- Also on a comics note, I have been watching Justice League (on [livejournal.com profile] everlasting_day's recommendation), which I love a lot. It made me like Batman by the simple expedient of having him be hilariously grumpy and sarcastic basically all the time, and it has Wonder Woman who I already loved (I just watched an episode which was all about her getting a girlfriend. Possibly that is not what it was supposed to be about. Nevermind. IT WAS GREAT), yay. And I adore The Flash, and am growing v. fond of Hawkgirl, especially in her scenes with Green Lantern. And J'onn J'onzz is voiced by Carl Lumbly! DIXON! ♥

- Have I linked to DC girls in sweaters yet? I don't think I have, which is clearly an error on my part. The Batwoman one has just gone up and it is SO PRETTY.

Hmm, I was not overly delighted with the finale. I'm not quite at the "I diskard it uterly" stage yet, but many of the things it is currently choosing to be do not please me.

(Disclaimer: I was not entirely paying attention during this episode, since I was busy reading 52 volume 2 in the ad breaks and during any scenes I disapproved of. I'm finding 52 a bit of an uphill struggle, since I don't really know the backstory or what's going on or who about 90% of the characters are, but every now and then Renee Montoya gets a few pages, so I persevere. Anyway. Back to Downton Abbey.)

Here is a selection of things I have done since last I posted.

- Read a lovely Two and Jamie story by Helen Raynor ("All of Beyond", from Short Trips: Snapshots). It was sweet and kind, funny, hopeful and a little sad, just as a Second Doctor story should be. ♥

- Watched ALL the Warehouse 13 (well, except last night's episode). I don't know why it's taken me so long to get round to it, really, since if it were any further up my street it would be moving in with me. A lovely team who spend their time having steampunk adventures, caring about each other and making silly faces? DON'T MIND IF I DO. Now to get some icons...

- Been to London, twice, and seen many lovely people. ♥

- Read many many comics. Such as:
  • Batwoman: Elegy. SO GOOD. I was a little worried that the actual story wouldn't be my sort of thing, but I was completely sucked in by it. And the art is wonderful.

  • The first three Gotham Central collected editions: again, on the surface not really my thing, but still very enjoyable. Really well told stories with very dynamic art.

  • Batgirl Rising and The Flood: YES PLEASE ALL OF THIS. Absolutely adored both of these on pretty much every level: great characters, lovely development for Steph, really funny, and fundamentally optimistic.

  • Gail Simone's Wonder Woman run, up to Warkiller: I just love Wonder Woman's integrity, the way she will make her decisions and try to do what's right, and accept the consequences, whatever they are. Also, her team-up with Black Canary was just awesome.

- Almost finished knitting my Little Red Riding Hoodie (which is blue)! I am working on the attached i-cord edging and it is taking forever. I JUST WANT IT TO BE FINISHED. I have two other things I want to get on with, and I have also come down with a case of sock envy after seeing the pretty ones [livejournal.com profile] amicu made. WHY AREN'T YOU FINISHED YET, CARDIGAN?

- Watched lots more Voyager, and got rather squeeful at the end of "Blood Fever", both on its own merits and because it means spoilers )

I have also done/watched/read various other things which I do not feel moved to post about at this time.

- Vid rec: Alive by [personal profile] fly_to_dawn: awesome celebration of Primeval's Emily Merchant: time traveller, dinosaur fighter, all round amazing person. :D

- Speaking of vids, I am sort of after your help with my fictional female scientists one again, o lovely flist! As I mentioned last time, I was thinking about including Buffy disguising herself as a scientist, mostly because I love Buffy tremendously. And then I thought, well, Rose disguises herself as a scientist too: maybe if I can think of one or two more, it could be A Thing and not just Me Cheating. :D? The problem of course is that I can't think of any more. (I could've sworn that Sydney Bristow sneaked into somewhere dressed as a scientist, but I found this gallery of her aliases and it doesn't look like it.) Does anyone have any suggestions?

- Lately I have been reading a lot of comics! The medium still hasn't quite clicked for me, but I have been enjoying them all the same. Here is some incoherent squeeing some of the things I have been reading:

Now I need to make some Wonder Woman icons before I take "The Circle" back to the library. And also decide whether I'm going to ILL the next Batgirl, Secret Six and Wonder Woman books, since my library doesn't have them, or buy them and then resell them on Amazon. Decisions, decisions.
