mostly books, a little telly
Monday, 9 March 2009 13:06I am quite tired today, mostly because I sat up late last night finishing Worrals of the Islands. Oops. But I had to keep reading! I wanted to know just how many people Worrals was going to end up rescuing. :) This one had some unfortunately racist bits, which was a shame - I kept having to remind myself when it was written. But other than that, it was a great read, and fiercely feminist right from the beginning, with Worrals getting angry (and sarcastic) about the fact that the Squadron Leader was worried about her when he wouldn't have been worried about the male pilots, and then she tells him off for it! And he tries to excuse himself by talking about how some of the lads had found the Spitfires a little tricky, and she just says that they must be ham-fisted, because she's never had a problem. ♥ I had to stop and read that bit a few times because it was so awesome. ILU, Worrals! All the way through I liked how Worrals was the one in charge - of course she was, she's the senior officer. And Frecks got to be fantastic too, swooping in, rescuing Worrals and Rama, yay! My edition had pictures and I did feel terribly sorry for them in their uniforms. I have worn that uniform and it is not designed for heat.
On Saturday night I stayed up too late finishing the Attolia books (something of a pattern developing here, I think) which I love trememdously. They're just so well written: the plot is engrossing, the world the books are set in is beautifully drawn and developed, and the characters are wonderful. They're all very rounded and believable, and their interactions feel so real. Marvellous stuff and I cannot wait for the next one.
Law and Order: UK is on tonight, and I am really looking forward to it, which I wasn't expecting: I went into it thinking, "not really my thing, but it has Martha and Apollo and him off The State Within, it's worth trying" and ended up really liking it. It's weird watching stuff on the actual telly as opposed to the iplayer; I keep forgetting you can't pause it.

I have occasional bouts of staying up late to finish reading a gripping book - and always, always wish I hadn't come the following morning. Doesn't stop me doing it time and again, though! The perils of being a bibliophile!
(Talking of books, I'm going to get your DW ones back to you this week. Just need to go on my by-now traditional hunt for an envelope to send them back to you!)

Date: 9 Mar 2009 14:57 (UTC)The racism is unfortunate in that one, though some of it I can take a bit better because I know they were at war with the Japanese at the time. Sometimes in these books though they then go on to be racist to the natives as well and that really bothers me. But yes, feminist as all get out, and soooo femslashy to boot. That one's one of my very favourite Worrals books. ♥
