This post is a lot longer than I thought it was going to be
Wednesday, 14 January 2009 14:05- Have managed to catch another cold, yay. Am back at work today though and have only had a day and a half off so so far it is less horrendous than the last one I had. Also yesterday
amicu,
the_smut_fairy and
tigerpixie came round for Stitch 'n' Witch, which was excellent fun as always -
tigerpixie showed off her fantastic elf costume - though what with being ill and rushing around tidying beforehand (I tend to use all my surfaces including chairs as supplementary shelves) my brain had fallen out a bit, so I had to rip out about thirteen rows of my knitting at the end because I'd made a mistake. Everyone was a bit flabberghasted that I'm onto the second sleeve of something (the Sweetheart jumper from Domiknitrix) i.e. nearly finished. And to be honest it is a long time since I've actually finished anything, sigh.
- Today at work I have been boxing up journals to send to store. Fusty musty dusty; just what my respiratory system needs, heh. I went out at lunchtime and got some fresh air, it's a lovely day, not exactly warm but not bitter like it's been recently. I even saw one bloke wearing shorts which struck me as a rather eccentric decision, but then when I was in Durham I occasionally saw rahs wearing flip flops in the middle of winter, a crazy thing to do unless you no longer love your toes.
- To cheer me up, Lovefilm sent me some Stargate SG-1 to watch. I have been slowly and methodically working my way through all the episodes, because I am slightly obsessive like that, and am now I think somewhere in season 2. Unfortunately I have discovered that I don't really like O'Neill all that much, he can be a bit dismissive. Maybe it is the acting, as one of the ones I saw was the one with all the bodyswapping, and Teal'c!O'Neill (far too much punctuation there, I feel) was great and Daniel!O'Neill was adorable. But I do love all the other characters though. (I don't have an SG1 icon so one of my Atlantis ones will have to do.)
- Also, I have been playing around with my Inksome layout. I may not use it all that much, but if I do I want it to look pretty. I'm not quite happy with it yet - there's a few little kinks I can't work out how to fix, plus I really wish it had a sidebar (ETA: ah, that's better) - so it may go up and down a bit as I fiddle with it. I'm fairly happy with the header, although it seems to get less purple every time I look at it. It's the only graphicsy thing I've done so far this year so I'm pleased I remembered how!
- Finally finished The Infinity Race last Friday and I don't feel guilty about criticising it when I was only halfway through as it did not get any better. I am not sure that Anji would describe herself as a "little Asian girl", for instance. And I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more of the race itself, since "boats go ZOOM" makes me happy. Anyway, then I moved on to Nation, which was excellent as expected and very moving in places. Now I am reading The Fortune of War by Patrick O'Brian. I love this series. The writing is gorgeous, full of sweeps and falls like a ship at sea, and I am always impressed by how easily it carries me through the complicated sailing/battle bits, despite the fact that I only have a very vague notion of what a studdingsail or a mizzentop might be. It makes me want to use phrases like "for all love" and "give you joy" and "confusion to my enemies". Also, the characters are great, not just the main ones but also the minor thumbnail ones, very vivid and clear. I love Stephen and Jack and Sophie, and I am particularly fond of the friendship between Stephen and Sophie, especially when they are ganging up on Jack for his own good.

Hooray!
