Big Finish review: The Blue Tooth
Friday, 5 December 2008 10:09It seems that LJ have been changing things about again and entry titles are now links. I quite like this, apart from the fact that they are showing up pink for some reason, which doesn't really go with my layout. (ETA fixed thanks to someone in the latest news post commenting with the code, hurrah.) I am also amused in a headdesky way by the fact that when I went over to
lj_design to see if there was any announcement about it there (there wasn't) it was laid out in such a way that the right hand side of the entry text was chopped off.
Anyway! I listened to The Blue Tooth last night and thought it was excellent; very creepy. Jean's death was quite a shock - I was expecting them to rescue her - and the way it was done was chilling. I already have issues with things happening to people's teeth, so thanks for reinforcing that, Nigel Fairs. I thought Caroline John read it very well and managed to suggest the Doctor's and the Brigadier's voices without actually doing an impression of them. It was great to get a few little snapshots of Liz's life before she joined UNIT, too, as well as a bit more explanation as to why she left.
Also it gives me further fuel for my theory that Cybermen work best in black and white or on audio. Their voices are just so good, they send shivers down my spine, and this play in particular could be shocking and horrific in ways that couldn't really be done on TV. I wasn't quite sure if the reveal about Arnold quite made sense, but it was quite late by then and I was curled up in bed with the lights off so I may well have drifted in and out and missed bits of the explanation. Either way, it was a great play.
