Your main fandom of the year?
Going by tumblr reblogs (my main form of fannish interaction this year), probably Star Trek. I feel like it's been a fairly multifannish year, though, on the whole.

Your favorite film watched this year?
I've seen some great films this year! Moana and Hidden Figures got the year off to a flying start, and a few weeks ago I finally saw Mad Max: Fury Road, which was a great time. But overall the one I loved the most was Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. I loved seeing a queer, poly, kinky relationship presented with such sincerity and conviction, and without a trace of prurience. The Wonder Woman connection only made it more affecting.

Your favorite book read this year?
This year feels like it's been pretty good on the reading front - I feel like I've read a lot of solid four star stuff, and not much from the "why did I finish this" department. (And Goodreads confirms this, especially for the second half of the year.) Not sure I can actually pick a favourite, but here's some of the things I gave five stars to:

- All Systems Red - Martha Wells
- The Magpie Lord - KJ Charles
- A Tyranny of Queens - Foz Meadows
- The Pearl Thief - Elizabeth Wein
- Star Trek: Engima Tales - Una McCormack
- Station Eleven - Emily St John Mandel
- In Other Lands - Sarah Rees Brennan
- Ninefox Gambit - Yoon Ha Lee
- Jughead vol 1
- Voices - Ursula Le Guin
- Sorcerer to the Crown - Zen Cho
- Avi Cantor Has Six Months to Live - Sacha Lamb

And here's everything I read this year.

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
Listening to music is hard, ok, I'm not good at it. (This is probably the main reason I don't make more vids. How does music.) That being said, I have got really into Dar Williams's "Write This Number Down" recently.

Your favorite TV show of the year?
Well, [personal profile] silly_cleo and I rewatched all seven seasons of The West Wing in three and a half months over the summer, so that's got to be up there. Other contenders include The Good Place, One Day at a Time and Black Sails, all v g in different ways.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
BLACK SAILS. I wasn't expecting to be hugely into it, but I really was - I found it really compelling and ended up being extremely invested in almost all of the characters. It definitely didn't get everything right, but the things about it that were good were SO good that I find I can forgive it. Also if I had a time machine I would use it to follow the costume department around and see how they made everything.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Star Trek: Discovery was suuuuuper not for me on many levels. I hear it got better after I noped out, so maybe I should give it another try, but... I noped out really hard, and I just don't want to, even for the wonderful Michael Burnham.

Also I poked my nose into the Riverdale tag on AO3 for some reason and discovered that not only is the fandom ok with the show erasing Jughead's asexuality and aromanticism, they're actively participating in it. I mean, to be fair, probably they don't know? (WHY they don't know is a whole other kettle of argh.) But still. UGH.

Your favourite male character of the year?
Chidi Anagonwe is Extremely Relatable, as well as being an excellent nerd. I also had about seventeen times more feelings than I expected to about James Flint.

Your favourite female character of the year?
I would walk through fire for Eleanor Shellstrop. Anne Bonny is very weird and very good. I'm not up to date with Brooklyn 99, but I understand I picked a good fave in Rosa Diaz. Also I've been rewatching Babylon 5 with [personal profile] silly_cleo, [personal profile] cosmic_llin and [personal profile] walkthegale and it's reminded me what a formative influence Susan Ivanova was on me. Honourable mention to Bill Potts: I loved her a lot, I did not particularly love the episodes I saw her in (except the regency one, that was pretty great), I am very sad she's not coming back next year.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
No specific moments, but here are four excellent fannish experiences I had:
- Reading the first volume of Jughead's solo comic and feeling like I was finally seeing a character who was like me.
- Going to see Cursed Child with [personal profile] raven, an experience full of joy.
- Watching the reveal of Jodie Whittaker being cast as the Thirteenth Doctor: I'd seen the announcement so I already knew it was going to be her, but it was still incredibly meaningful.
- Reading Una McCormack's latest Star Trek book, Enigma Tales (aka The Garak Book of Garak), on the way to spend a week in the Lakes with my favourite people, going !!!!! all the way, and knowing there were going to be people at the other end of the journey to go !!!!! with in person.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
This is very much the time of year in which I wish I'd loved The Force Awakens like everyone else did. (I mean. I kind of don't, because I am still so angry and sad about it, and everything I've read about The Last Jedi makes me think I wouldn't like that one either, but it looks like a fun fannish experience to have, and being the only one who didn't like the thing is rotten. (The various hot takes on how anyone who didn't like The Last Jedi is Wrong are... not helping. I expect they're probably making some good points, but they're also very much hitting me where I'm vulnerable.))

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I... don't actually know? The main things on my list to try were The Good Place and Black Sails and, well, see above. What else should I be watching, friends?

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Looking forward to fannish things hasn't really been working out for me, but on my radar for next year as things I want to watch/read are: Proud Mary, Black Panther, A Wrinkle in Time, A Suitable Girl*, Jessica Jones, the Thirteenth Doctor, Ocean's 8.

*I still can't quite believe this is really going to be a thing? (I'm definitely skeptical that it's going to be a thing in 2018, but we shall see.) I remember reading A Suitable Boy back in 2002 and going "this is great, but I wish there were even more", then looking at Vikram Seth's oeuvre and thinking "looks like he doesn't ever do sequels, oh well", and now here we are. O.o I know it's set decades later, but even so.
