I may have mentioned here that 2008 has not hitherto been my Best Year Ever, what with the broken (newish) telly and the small flood in my old flat, then failing to find a new flatmate for said flat and having to move in a hurry... well, this trend has continued with BURGLARY. Got back after work yesterday to find the window next to the front door of my flat had been smashed in (with half a paving slab!) and some dastardly varmints had let themselves in and pinched my laptop (CURSES. If I am more than usually rubbish about commenting/replying to comments, this is why), Vanky's old PS2 wot he sold to me (only plays Lego Star Wars), lots of DVDs (they left Dead Like Me and Withnail and I; clearly they have no taste), sparra's old digital camera (why yes I do get all my gadgets secondhand from friends), my old phone (comprehensively broken) and my rucksack. Luckily I wasn't in at the time and the things they did not take included any valuable jewelery (because I don't have any), the camera I usually use (cunningly concealed beneath some books that had fallen over and a pair of gloves; who says having a messy flat is a BAD thing?), my MP3 player (HAH) and my Doctor Who collection (hurray!). Anyway the police came and CSI Bristol dusted for fingerprints and also my parents came down to help sort everything out. Someone from the letting agency came round to board up the window and I phoned them this morning and demanded better locks since the current one is a bit feeble. This lunchtime I am going to see my insurance people; the problem is I haven't yet transferred the policy to my new place (I tried, but they wouldn't accept "it's about as old as the last place" for the age of my house, was going to phone again last night, oh teh ironing!). Though it does say on my policy that I have to inform them within 40 days if I move and it's been less than that.

So I am a bit stressed at the moment. Tis ok though, it could've been worse.

Thanks! Most of what was on the laptop was pretty ephemeral anyway, I think. And I did some backing up last summer when my last laptop had a funny turn so hopefully most of the stuff I really wanted to keep will be on that.

Thanks! The window's actually pretty beefy - it's really thick and it's got wire in it. They had to ram it pretty hard with half a paving slab to get through it and I don't think they'd've bothered if the lock hadn't been so obviously rubbish.

Damn! I'm so sorry--a friend of mine was burglarized a few months ago and it really upset her. I hope the insurance people are good to deal with.

Yep, completely intact, and I think that's why I'm fairly cheerful about the whole thing. Take my laptop, ok, but don't touch my EDAs! Not that I am obsessed or anything :)
