Have just finished watching The Underwater Menace and have a great deal of love for it. According to About Time received fannish wisdom has it that episode three is the weakest; clearly this is nonsense, episode three was the one I loved the most. It had Polly saving the day by pretending to be a goddess, Our Heroes dressing up (Polly's mermaid outfit! Ben and Jamie wearing rubber uniforms! The Doctor's hippy gear!), a random synchronised swimming bit (my love for this may be influenced by the fact that my local panto, which I was in a few times, usually had a few random ballet bits in it. Plus the fish person costumes are brill - I am not being sarcastic, I really loved them) and, of course, NOTHING IN ZE VORLD CAN STOP ME NOW! Not to mention the bit at the beginning where Zaroff is all "rant rant rant WHAT ARE YOU STARING AT?" and Thous replies "The fact that you have clearly gone bonkers in the nut, oh dear Nothing! Nothing at all!" I did facepalm IRL at "you'll need the gift of the gab"/"well, you are Irish, aren't you?" though.
Other things: poor Polly had to do more than her fair share of screaming, flailing and getting captured, but she had some good bits too, like working out when they were, speaking in tongues, the aforementioned goddess impersonation. The bit where she and Jamie are running from the water reminded me of Joe's Kingdom, and if anyone gets that reference I will be terribly happy, as it was a children's radio drama that aired over a decade ago. Lovely Ben/Polly hug at the end, shame we only have a blurry telesnap of it, ditto Polly wearing the Doctor's hat. And everyone laughing at the Doctor trying to claim he can control the TARDIS if he really wants to. ♥ I think there were other things I wanted to mention but have already forgotten. Memory like a sieve, sigh.
Some dialogue of yay:
"I don't know, I've never seen him go for food like this before. It's usually hats." -- Polly. (The transcript I found had "ham" instead of "hats", but surely it must be hats?)
BEN: Well, blimey, look at him. He ain't normal, is he?
GUARD: Yes, I see what you mean.
-- and Ben calling the Doctor a berk, heeeee.
BEN: Yeah, I'm not sorry to be out of that place. Poo, Jamie you don't half stink of fish!
JAMIE: Oh, you want to take a wee sniff of yourself, Benjamin. He's not exactly a bonnie bunch of heather.
Jamie called him "Benjamin"! Oh, I love this team TARDIS! Why did you burninate them so, oh Beeb, why?
