usuallyhats: The cast of Critical Role sitting round a table playing Dungeons and Dragons (gwen not a morning person)

Was not particularly looking forward to Torchwood on BBC3 last night due to how last week's was dull as ditchwater and also this is the one of which RTD said "the ming-mongs won't like it because the ming-mongs don't like humour". But I actually enjoyed it a bit.

Mostly because it had lots of Gwen and I like her. She made comedy faces and looked lovely in her wedding dress! And her parents call her duckling. Awwww.

They did manage to deflect the episode being a bit "look at the madwoman being irrational about her wedding!" a little with Gwen's lines about how expensive it was and how she wanted it to go ahead for Rhys's sake. Also Rhys pointing out that it's his wedding too. Not perfect but at least they tried.

I may be being overly optimistic, but I felt like it also laid the Jack/Gwen thing to rest. I interpreted their dance at the end as sort of being them acknowledging that there is something between them (which I still don't entirely see, but YMMV) but that pursuing it wouldn't be worth losing what they already have, both in terms of their friendship with each other and their relationships. It could work, but it probably wouldn't be worth the trainwreck that it would cause. Does this make any sense? If I am right about this I will be well pleased as it strikes me as a very adult way of handling it. Plus I have been liking the little friendship moments between Gwen and Ianto that we've been seeing this season and I feel like if they were heading for Jack/Gwen they would either have played them up and go for an extra helping of Epic Betrayal, or they would have cut them altogether to make Gwen look less bad. But then maybe I am foolish in assuming that there is logic going on behind the scenes.

Gwen/Rhys! I love them so much, I have added them to my interests. The joyful scene of them saying their vows whilst covered in alien blood made me very happy - accepting that Gwen can't split her life neatly into "working at Torchwood" and "being married to Rhys", she has to find a way to integrate them, because they're going to spill over into each other anyway.

All through the scene with Gwen and her parents I was thinking about how she was going to explain not being pregnant any more and how awful having to fake a miscarriage would be. And then they addressed it in the very next scene! Well done Torchwood. And then when the monster had Gwen's mum hostage and she was walking slowly towards her this was happening in my brain: "she's got a gun in her bouquet, hasn't she? She must have a gun in her bouquet. It would be fab if she pulled a gun right about.... SHE DID! I LOVE THIS SHOW!"

Am unreasonably annoyed that Ianto's line about his father being a tailor rather scuppers the fanon about him being Jo Grant's son. I suppose Cliff could have decided that the sciencing wasn't working out and gone into tailoring instead. And it was a good line.

In terms of things I didn't like, there was the Owen/Tosh will they, won't they. Am v. fed up of this. Get together or don't (preferably the latter), just stop wibbling about it!

Also was not terribly pleased with Tosh this week. Some of the time she got to be awesome!Tosh, snarking at Banana and shooting things, and that was good, but then she was being all needy at Owen. Then there was the scene with Gwen when she did that thing where she was pretending to be all "yay, Gwen" but was actually asking for pity. Irritating enough at the best of times but especially given that all is not sunshine and roses for Gwen either what with the whole alien growing inside her scenario.

Rhys was all competent and stuff with the alien device thingy! And he had a chainsaw! If this sort of thing continues I may have to declare him the Best Of Them.

I always think I just have a few little points to make about Torchwood but then I end up waffling on for ages.

I can fanwank the tailor thing easy. Cliff got eaten by something on one of his expeditions, leaving Jo pregnant with Ianto. She remarries when he's still little to a tailor!

His father was a tailor? (Brain:"He sewed his new blue jeans?" Argh, shut up, brain!) Well, that explains the impeccable dress sense.

I liked that dance at the end. Made me think "Hmm, which one's leading? (Check position of hands) I think Ianto is! Excellent!"

By the way, what does "YMMV" stand for? The only thing I can think of is "you make me vomit".

Yeah, I did notice the line, and the resulting inevitable smut.
