1901 - New York becomes the first U.S. state to require automobile license plates.
1953 - Francis Crick and James D. Watson publish Molecular structure of nucleic acids: a structure for deoxyribose nucleic acid describing the double helix structure of DNA.
1974 - Carnation Revolution: A leftist military coup in Portugal restores democracy after more than forty years as a corporate fascist state.
1990 - The Hubble Telescope is deployed into orbit from the Space Shuttle Discovery.
Births
1284 - King Edward II of England (d. 1327) I knew this one already! He is exactly 700 years older than me and was the first Prince of Wales.
1945 - Björn Ulvaeus, Swedish singer and songwriter (ABBA)
1969 - Gina Torres, American actress. AWESOME. (Er, I added that. It doesn't say it on wikipedia. But it should.)
Deaths
1878 - Anna Sewell, English author (b. 1820)
2008 - Humphrey Lyttelton, Jazz musician and broadcaster, (b. 1921) :( I didn't know Humph died on my birthday, just that it was around then.
Holiday
ANZAC Day (Australia, New Zealand). My birthday's a public holiday in three countries y'know. Also it's the latest day that Easter can be, which I didn't know! I have to wait thirty years for it to be on the same day as Easter, though.
Have been feeling a bit frazzled the last day or two, mostly because the people in the flat above were nattering away until 2am on Tuesday night, which since I work til 7.30 on Wednesday evenings was not appreciated. But they were blissfully silent last night and I have bought some earplugs, so hopef. that will make things better. And! I am going back to Cheltenham for the weekend, haven't been for aaaaages. It is The Mother's birthday tomorrow and she and I and The Father are going to see Sandi Toksvig at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, hurrah. Also I'm meeting up with some schoolfriends for lunch on Saturday, then going into town to buy some wool, at last! There are two places in the centre of Cheltenham that sell wool as opposed to none at all in Bristol, which seems somewhat ridiculous as Bristol is about four times the size of Cheltenham. But there you go.
