"the himalayas are quite tall at this time of the year."
Saturday, 19 April 2008 21:05After a gap of MANY YEARS I have finally watched some more new-to-me Blake's 7. Oh it is so good. Though I miss watching it with The Sister.
Two particularly good episodes, yay! The dialogue is just so good. I particularly liked the bit with everyone confessing Vague Affection for Avon:
Cally: "We've talked about it, and discovered we care what happens to you."
Tarrant: "Within reason, of course."
Dayna: "We're as surprised as you are."
Vila: "Not to mention embarrassed!"
Heeeee. I love my dysfunctional crew. Oh and Vila bringing Avon a drink was sweet. Though on the subject of the crew I was not keen on the end of Children of Auron which was a bit off - Avon cracking a joke and everyone falling about laughing is not terribly Blake's 7, not to mention the fact that Cally was off being all traumatised on account of how her sister and, oh yes, most of her planet just died. I did sort of expect that to get swept under the rug... but not quite that soon!
I liked Children of Auron though I could have done with slightly fewer soft focus telepathy scenes. Rumours of Death was fantastic, it got very tense towards the end. I worked out the first Anna twist (eventually. I am bad at recognising faces) but not the second and it worked really well. And in both episodes it was great to see so many female characters in the main roles - ok the extras tend to default to male, but still. (Also I was surprised to see six Federation troopers on screen at the same time, we don't usually get that, they must have had some money that week.) The bit from the end of Children of Auron where Cally faints and it's Dayna who catches her was fab and kudos to Josette Simon for making it look effortless - though I imagine that Jan Chappelle doesn't weigh a huge amount. The two guards from Rumours of Death were great, I love scenes in sci-fi where future people do ordinary things.
I thought the sets looked pretty good in these two, actually (I seem to be able to reset my brain to take into account production limitations, which is yay). Especially Children of Auron - Servalan's ship was pretty cool, sort of reptilian, and I liked the bits of Auron we saw. The genetic lab reminded me of Forbidden Planet, actually, though I have only seen that film once, nearly eight years ago, so my brain may be making things up.
Also, costumes! Cally's Rumours of Death one was pretty spiffy, I thought, and I also liked Anna's grey outfit. Dayna doesn't come off nearly so well, though it's a good colour, and Tarrant is channeling Treguard again.
