Have had a lovely weekend with people over for flat warming (![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
tigerpixie brought her zombie racing game and hilarity ensued), and my parents sent Emergency Backup Laptop via Jess (thank you!) so now I has internets. Slow laptop is slooow (ok, it is also that impatient Jenni is impatient) but is shiny to have it, I like the keyboard better than the one on Stolen Laptop and it has PowerDVD so I can make screencaps again, yay!
And today I watched the Fires of Pompeii. I enjoyed this episode, but with some reservations...
Reservations first:
- The music was incredibly annoying, distractlingly overblown: LOOK! Here is an IMPORTANT bit. And here is a SAD bit. And now some DRAMA. Just let us make our own minds up.
- Although I liked the comedy wheeler dealer and some of the bits with the family, I do worry that it was done partly in the spirit of "we can't possibly relate to people unless it is pointed out how they are JUST LIKE US. Also I hear there was a Cambridge Latin Course injoke thingummy? Forshame, Ecce Romani was clearly the superior Latin textbook.
- All the Doctor's "o hai I is the DOCTOR, I is all LIKE UNTO A GOD, let's pause for a mo whilst the companion talks about how fab I am" bits. The speeches, that shot of the Doctor looking emo and serious through the ash and fire wot we've seen before... tiresome.
- The Doctor goes off investigating with the son of the family, whilst Donna tries on clothes with the daughter. Harrumph.
Good things:
- Yes, Donna. Catherine Tate is very good at the subtle bits. Sometimes I feel the comedy is a bit too broad, not sure if that's her or the director, but she is good enough in scenes like the one in the TARDIS towards the end to make up for it. And I did LOL at the Spartacus joke.
- Donna again, challenging the Doctor, trying to save the day, not letting him get away with anything. (though I have in the back of my mind that these are things that made me happy about Martha at the beginning of last season, which is not exactly encouraging.) The scene with the lever was fantastic. If I liked Ten enough to ship him I would be shipping him with Donna now. Also she had good questions! Asking about speaking in Latin (I'd been wondering about that) and noticing the volcano.
- The Doctor admitting that yeah, he does need someone to stop him. Way too late, but still good. Assuming it lasts.
- It looked really good. Donna looked brilliant in her purple toga.
- Going back for that family, making a difference, even if it's only for four people. Not just by saving their lives but by changing their attitudes too.
- City of Death reference! "It's modern art!"
