Friday, 26 September 2014 09:16If I have ever recommended Lightworks to you, I am very sorry and entirely retract that rec. D: I upgraded to version 12 on Wednesday (I didn't want to, but it doesn't let you use an old version if there's a newer one available) and it's basically been a disaster. First all the clips I'd already imported were offline; the option to relink to them was greyed out and reimporting them made no difference. I was so frustrated by this that I actually posted about it on the forums (this may not seem like much, but for me it's HUGE), and after trying a few different things, someone suggested running Lightworks as an administrator, which I did, and ta-dah! There were all my clips again. So I bounced off happily to meet my West Wing watching group. On the way home, I had an idea for part of my vid, so I fired up Lightworks and started fiddling about with my newly reappeared clips. Only to find that the sound wouldn't play. /o\ Oh well, I thought, I can just reimport it, it's only one track and I haven't edited it. So I did that and... it played, but somewhat faster than is really ideal. Originally it was a four minute track; played through Lightworks it's lasting three and a half minutes and I have no idea why. *gnashes teeth in frustration*
This is also SPECTACULARLY bad timing as it's induction week, ie the busiest and most stressful week of the year, and after a long day of explaining how the printers work I could really have done with coming home and playing with this vid project that I'm really excited about, but HA HA NOPE. I'm going to try converting and re-importing the audio tonight, but if that doesn't work I'll be looking for new editing software. Does anyone have any recs? I only really need it to be able to handle multiple video tracks and non-linear editing, and also to WORK. (Being able to zoom in on clips would be great too, but it's not essential: I only have one clip I've used that for so far in my current project, and only to highlight which character I'm focusing on in that clip (HI CASS HI). And if push comes to shove I could always jury rig some system involving exporting the zoomed in clip from Lightworks.)

As a suggestion short of finding a new editor, just as a stopgap measure, could you slow down the audio? My memory from my brief times messing with it is that Lightworks has a "playback speed" option for both video and audio tracks. Is it possible that either is has been set to something slightly too fast, or that you could deliberately set it to whatever slows it down to the previous length?
If you are looking for a different NLE, I may be able to go source some cheap/free suggestions, but it will depend on what OS you use - I think you're a Windows person?
Unfortunately, the free version of Lightworks is the most advanced NLE available to you to my knowledge. Most of the other free Windows-based editors aren't that great. Like, Windows Live and stuff, which doesn't have mulitple tracks (and last I checked, didn't even have a timeline?)
The two things I can think to suggest are:
http://www.ivsedits.com/default/ <-- IVS Edits - I have no experience with this, I just know it's a Windows non-linear editor with a free version.
http://www.blender.org/ <-- This is mainly a 3D modelling programme but it comes with a build in video editor that I know has multitrack capabilities and I'm pretty sure can zoom. The downside is that it's really weird as compared to other editors. Like I get the impression using it is pretty counter intuitive at first. However,
If I'm wrong and you're on Mac, then Blender will still work for you, and you can also add:
http://kdenlive.org/ <-- this is actually pretty good from what I recall (it also works on Linux, so I tried it out). It's kind of like a souped up version of the old WMM or iMovie with multiple tracks, more effects, and the ability to keyframe some of them, even.
GOOD LUCK.
