Orphan Black - Close to Home - shinyjenni from shinyjenni on Vimeo.

(password: cloneclub)

lay your head where they hold
hide the demarcations of your soul
and play your silent scream role
harmonize your own worth to what you're shown
normalized and nowhere close to home

claim the truth that gets lost
in the miles of memory and open folds
so change these rules and let's cross
all the sacred boundaries we've overgrown
build a brave new foundry close to home

here's unbroken bone
it's a psalm from the book of lies
language you don't recognize as part of your own
leave that alone
leave that alone

this is the taste you were forever chasing
there is no way to contain it when it comes to set you off
accept the shame on some shaky basis
admit that you were mistaken about it after all
but oh the ache, the fantasy forsaken
the alien and adjacent you would give anything to take off
this is the claim that you'll keep on making
this is the point of the breaking
here it comes to set you off

we won't be sold
any song from your book of lies
language we don't recognize as part of our own
leave us alone
leave us alone

pay them all to sign on
diagnose some fault line most will know
and raise your life a new dawn
tyrant of your cells now overthrown
never have you felt so close to home

Oh, WOW, this is amazing. I love all the parallels and the way you play off the lyrics and WOW TATIANA MASLANY HAS THE BEST FACE and this song is so great and it's a perfect, perfect fit. Awesome job.

I don't watch this show, so I know I'm missing a lot of the context, but I really enjoyed the way it escalated from a seemingly mundane drama (clones not withstanding), a suburban backdrop, normality and tea, through to some seriously violent and dangerous sci-thriller stuff. I definitely need to watch this show at some point...

I love this! The song remains an amazing choice, and I love how you use it to give them all little individual character study bits, along with telling their whole collective story. The way you use the changes in the music to do that is super effective. Plus, all the visual or situational or thematic parallels, which I notice more of every time I watch! Like the parallel of Helena crawling out of the cage with Alison crawling out of bed with Donny, what, that is amazing! This totally captures the complexity of all these women, and their complex, uneasy, necessary relationships with each other. <3

So I watched this again, hoping to have more intelligent commentary and...I don't. But it's AWESOME. I really love how well you've used the different paces of the song to kind of build and remove pressure? sort of like the show. Like the way you use the intro music to introduce all of them, and then it builds from there. Anyway, it's really cool, and such a good song for them. (also so glad this prompted me to watch the show.)

I haven't got round to watching Orphan Black yet (I will! I promise!) so I know I missed a LOT of context and layers in this - but it still works incredibly well on a visual and emotional level, even for someone with only the most basic understanding of the show. The flow and pacing, and the way you really exploit the beats of the song, is wonderful. And the shift from domesticity and character introductions into creepiness and violence and investigation is really subtly done.

I really enjoyed seeing this at VidUKon! I've not seen the second season of Orphan Black yet, but I enjoyed the first season a lot, and I think you really capture not only the confusion that runs through the lives of all the clones but all the ways their lives intersect and the consequences that brings. I love how smoothly the vid flows and the way you tie motion and movement to the different lives of the clones.
