Agents of SHIELD: Pilot.
Friday, 27 September 2013 21:22Agents of SHIELD happened! I didn't adore it, but I liked it a lot, which is great, because I was really looking forward to it and was SO WORRIED I wouldn't like it. Boring Interchangeable Lead Dude can go away ANY TIME, though. Second only to Natasha in the spying department? YEAH RIGHT. Also, I think we were supposed to think that he was a bit of a dick, like with the "I try to mask my pain in front of beautiful women, it makes me seem more masculine" line, but in a relatable, "I look forward to seeing him become less terrible" way, and I... only thought the former. :/ Other than that...
- It didn't quite have the sparkle I want from it yet, but I'm willing to chalk that up to being a pilot, and there was enough to make me keep watching, so.
- I am not that massive a fan of Coulson, but he's fine. Er, this sounds like damning with faint praise, but it's meant to be a positive. Imagine I'm doing a thumbs up at this point, or something. "This is where they actually make the red tape, isn't it?" Heh.
- MELINDA MAY YES CAN SHE BE THE LEAD INSTEAD? I liked how annoyed she was when she woke up from being knocked out. TELL US MORE ABOUT HER ANGSTY BACKSTORY.
- So pleased to see J August Richards again. ♥ I wish he had stuck around. I don't think that the thematic stuff about the American dream being broken worked as well as I and the show wanted it too, but I liked that it was there. Also I liked the origin stories line, and "...I should carry a shield?"
- I liked the Science Twins a great deal, and one day I may work out which one is Fitz and which one is Simmons. "It's like magic! ...only it's SCIENCE." "And now it's ACTUALLY oozing. ...Fun!" And I loved that Simmons (or possibly Fitz) got Fitz (or possibly Simmons) to calm down by telling him to pretend it was an exam, heh, that was a nice touch. ETA I also loved the bit where the boy one couldn't stop double entendring, because I am twelve years old.
- I liked Skye too. I just like liking people, on the whole.
- More Maria Hill is ALWAYS to the good. I hope she shows up a lot, that would be excellent. "I don't think Thor is technically a god."/"You haven't been near his arms." SHE SPEAKS FOR US ALL.
- Let's keep Ron Glass's character, please.
- The shipping news: I am pro Melinda/Maria, Melinda/whichever the girl Science Twin is, and possibly Coulson/Ron Glass's character. Anti-ship: Ward/screen time.
- And of course, I loved that it ended on a note of hope and optimism and helping people and flying cars! That is what I want in my comics and comics-adjacent fandoms. And all the other fandoms, let's be honest.
So in conclusion, not SHOW OF MY HEART, LOVE FOREVER or anything, but certainly a fun way to spend an hour every Friday.

Date: 29 Sep 2013 17:57 (UTC)I do hope this will remain a proper ensemble cast show and not give much screen time to Interchangeable Lead Dude: while I see how being utterly unmemorable can be an advantage when spying, it's not much help when one is a major character in a show. It's a relief to see what the rest of the main cast look like, otherwise I wouldn't be able to tell him apart from people.
