"please do not lecture me while my brain is on fire"
Wednesday, 15 May 2013 21:21Back from Barcelona! I had a lovely time seeing the sights and also my family. Among other things, we went into the Sagrada Familia, which was spectacular, and also to the Fundacio Joan Miro, which I went to on a school trip in 2000 and wanted to see again. It was definitely worth it: I particularly liked seeing these three untitled pieces, which sadly don't look nearly as good in photos, and Morning Star: I've had a poster of this since 2000 and yet I still found myself standing in front of it for ages, just looking at it. Also it was sunny! I don't really know how to deal with that. (I was going to link to my photos here, but sadly Facebook seem to have taken away the option to let you do that, because it is the worst.) Then I came back to England and it was freezing cold and raining and I didn't have a coat, and therefore I plunged instantly into the Slough of Despond. Oh well, at least it's nearly Vidukon.
Here are some miscellaneous comics things I felt like posting about:
- Should I be reading FF? Because it looks adorable.
- I have been slightly worried about the Captain Marvel/Avengers Assemble crossover, because the whole "female lead is seeing things that aren't there" aspect has the potential to be unfortunate, but I bought the introductory issue and liked it a lot, mostly because it's basically a bonus Captain Marvel issue. The introductory scene, with Carol and Jess putting up "missing" posters for Rose, balanced a nice autumnal tone with some great witty dialogue; Thor's appearance was a delight ("mayhap your enemy hath wee little arms", he remarks, discussing the possibility that Carol's unknown enemy is attacking her with dinosaurs for an important symbolic reason), seeing tiny fangirl Kit - sorry, Lieutenant Trouble - always make me happy, and I loved that it ended on a note of defiance, not despair. It also made me think about the similarities between Captain Marvel and Bryan Q. Miller's Batgirl (whyyyyyy doesn't anything about that book exist any more? *wails, gnashes teeth, rends garments*): they both star a tough blonde woman who has recently taken on a new identity that used to belong to someone they respected; they both have a large female heavy rotating supporting cast of excellent people, including a tiny fangirl; they are both delightfully quiptastic... I think we may have found my formula for a perfect comic. Obviously they're not identical - Steph and Carol are at very different stages of their superhero careers, for example, but even so, the similarities please me.
- Here is a thing that is both good and frustrating:
superladiesmissing, cataloguing superhero merchandise that has forgotten to involve any women (something I particularly hate because I like stuff but also like superheroines). Particular offenders seem to be the Avengers film stuff and Justice League merchandise. Dear people making Justice League stuff: YOU NEED TO PUT WONDER WOMAN ON IT. THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. Ideally other women too, but Wonder Woman is ESSENTIAL. WeLoveFine seems to be better than most at having superheroine merchandise, though their "put it all out in men's sizes only then add women's sizes if enough people ask" policy is a little frustrating, but sadly shipping to the UK makes it prohibitively expensive. :( I have ended up resorting to making my own Steph!Batgirl t-shirt but this is by no means an ideal solution.

Date: 18 May 2013 02:58 (UTC)Your Steph shirt is adorable! Did you, like, make it with iron-on letters?
Oh, man, Wonder Woman, DC whyyyy? My whole family is getting so tired of hearing my WHERE IS WONDY? rants.
I was kind of wary of the Captain Marvel/Avengers crossover of extra long name of enemy within-ness because OH NO CAROL'S BRAIN. IT IS BROKE. But I liked what I saw of the preview scans (Jesssss you rock) and I saw an interview Kelly Sue did with IGN that made me feel a lot better about it. Haha, that Thor quote about the dinosaurs is great. Do you think I'd be able to make sense of it just knowing Carol has a brain lesion and isn't allowed to fly, or is it better to wait until after I've read the second trade?

Date: 20 May 2013 08:38 (UTC)Thank you! I cut the letters (and bat!) out of felt and stuck them down with fabric glue, slightly fiddly but worth it. I'm pretending they are a bit wobbly on purpose. ;D
I knowwwwww. (Have you seen
I am reassured by the fact that if ANYONE does the "Carol has to be stopped for her own good" thing it is most likely to be Jess at this point. You could jump in just knowing about the brain lesion and the fact that a mysterious enemy has been targeting Carol and not have any problems, but I think you'd get more out of it by reading the second trade first - there's a lot of background there and it also introduces Carol's secondary cast (who are great).

Date: 20 May 2013 19:54 (UTC)A bit wobbly is more authentic. Steph would totally make her own bat-shirt, and Steph is not very coordinated, so her shirt would come out kind of lop-sided, and then Damian would see it before she could fix it and she would have to pretend she did it on purpose. And then for months Damian would be complaining about Western fashion and no one would understand because Steph had convinced him that crooked letters were currently the height of haute couture.
Oops feelings ramble.
That is a neat vid! I have never seen any of the Wonder Woman TV show, but now I sort of want to. I even like the cheesy 70s special effects, haha. Is that Donna Troy running with her at the end?
I am worried by how they try to replace Wonder Woman, too, like sometimes you will see Batman and Superman and the Green Lantern, and I'm like, no, Hal Jordan is not in the DC Trinity, you can have just Batman and Superman if you want but why is Hal Jordan suddenly there if you need a third dude?
Oh, cool, thanks. Hmm, I think my trade will come in the mail next month some time...I guess at this point it doesn't make that much difference--if I tried to read it now, I could always reread it in a month if it didn't make sense the first time, or they will probably still have issues in stock in a month if I just wait.

Date: 21 May 2013 08:54 (UTC)*g* yep! I mean, she's fine when she has to do actual construction type sewing (see her Spoiler and Robin costumes) but fiddling around with getting the letters all perfectly neat and even? Not so much. ♥
It is, yeah! I've only seen the first season (the WW2 set one) but I really liked it. Lynda Carter is so amazing.
*nods* Trinity + Green Lantern made sense when they were trying to push his film, but dropping Wonder Woman for him? Not OK. The DC facebook page has (or had, I haven't looked at it for a while) a banner showing Batman, Superman and... Aquaman, and again, I get that they're trying to push him at the moment, but Wonder Woman needs to be in there too.
if I tried to read it now, I could always reread it in a month if it didn't make sense the first time
I think that's probably the option I'd recommend: the first issue didn't have any spoilers for the Captain Marvel stuff, so keeping up with the crossover as it happens and then going back and rereading it with the added context would work!

Date: 21 May 2013 22:12 (UTC)Oh, yes, I had forgotten about Steph and her many sewing adventures. It was so cute when she was making her Robin costume and she told her mom that she was sulking, and that using a sewing machine was now part of sulking, and could she please go away, talking was interrupting her sulking. :P
Yeah, I remember that banner. It may have come from the way FB banners require a certain aspect ratio and are thus often just sections of larger photos? Like I wonder if it was just an unfortunately cropped Justice League cover. But I was super mad about it when I saw it. Wonder Woman gets to be the DC Universe logo all by herself on Comixology, though, which is neat.
I think that's probably the option I'd recommend
Cool, thanks for the advice! :)
