can't think of title. brain too squished.
Tuesday, 18 December 2012 10:27Hello, new people from various friending memes! I was going to do an introduction post but I couldn't think of anything to say in it. This is the sort of quality dreamwidthing you can expect around here. We could make this an "ask me questions if there's things you want to know" type of post (for everyone, however long you've known me!)? Oh, and also, as a round up: I'm also shinyjenni on Twitter, Librarything/Goodreads (prefer the former for usability and the latter for social things, if only I could somehow smush them together...), and Ravelry, though I don't use that last as much as I always mean to. And I am
usuallyhats on tumblr; I've been trying to tag things properly over there - if there's anything in particular you'd like me to tag for Tumblr Saviour purposes, do let me know! ♥
Also, I have a fandom stocking! I wasn't going to sign up this year, as I'm not sure I'll have the time or the wherewithal to make things, but it's my favourite thing, so I'll try and make time. (Might nick my parents' microphone while I'm there and make some more podfics...) Let me know where yours are!
I went to see The Hobbit last night! I really enjoyed it, but goodness it was long. It's not that I thought it dragged, or anything - though it could've been more tightly edited, and I am always wary of slow-mo (watching Andromeda left me with a knee-jerk "STOP THAT" reaction to slow-mo) - there was just an awful lot of it. And some of the CGI was a bit dodgy. But aside from that I liked it lots: the bits towards the beginning in the Shire were particularly ace. I was hugely entertained by Thranduil turning up on his battle-Elk, entire army in tow... just to tell the dwarfs that he wasn't going to help them. Also, Radagast! ♥ I'm usually a bit grumpy at Martin Freeman (he keeps being in things I can't really be having with, like The Office, Sherlock, the Hitch-Hiker's film, and Love Actually), but he was pretty good as Bilbo. And now I want to reread ALL of LOTR. Well, maybe not the appendices.

Date: 18 Dec 2012 21:13 (UTC)Also, hi! You commented somewhere and I thought you were cool, though now I no longer remember where. Possibly fandom_stocking?
Would you mind expanding on what you like about librarything v. goodreads? I have both but ended up only keeping up with goodreads (and have added you there) because more social. I feel like I didn't spend enough time on librarything to appreciate its virtues.

Date: 19 Dec 2012 14:29 (UTC)I really like the social aspects of goodreads - they're much better than the librarything ones, which feel a bit cursory: I like getting the update emails and being able to like and comment on things. With librarything I like the fact that there's lots of available sources to add books from, so I can add the exact edition that I have, and choose the right cover for it. (I should probably mention that I'm a library assistant studying for a Masters in librarianship, so possibly my perspective on how important this feature is is a little skewed! :D) And it lets me create books if I can't find them in any of their sources, so I can catalogue everything I own. I think when it comes down to it, librarything is primarily a cataloguing tool, whereas goodreads is a social network about books, and I'm trying to use them both as both! Plus the librarything interface just feels more user-friendly to me, though that may be because I've been using it for longer and am therefore more used to it. I like being able to merge tags too - I can't seem to work out how to do that on goodreads. (Also, goodreads doesn't work very well in Firefox+script blocker, and I can never work out which scripts I need to unblock to make it work properly...)

Date: 22 Dec 2012 06:44 (UTC)I don't write, so I don't have anything for your fandom stocking, but speaking of Rose/Ace, have you read Amuse Yourselves by samfeasor and the Polar Bear's Golf Club by doyle? Both are pretty excellent. And if you like Buffy and Who, you might enjoy this as well...
I think I'm going to skip the Hobbit because I am only vaguely interested and keep on hearing that it's so looooooooog. Makes me want to read the book again, though!

Date: 29 Dec 2012 22:57 (UTC)It's enjoyable but yeah, so very long! It might be a good one to watch on DVD - it's fairly episodic so it would be easy to break up into more manageable chunks. The book is now on my "to reread" list too!
