lots of noses out of joint
Monday, 8 October 2012 11:35Or, in which I attempt to distract myself from dissertation angst by wittering on about last night's Downton Abbey.
And now back to the blanket fort of dissertation denial.
- Most of this is going to be grumpy, I think. I am enjoying watching it still, but in a way that I am also enjoying complaining about it. (Mostly enjoying complaining about it.) Not quite hatewatching, more like grumblefun.
- The coveted "worst person of the episode" award this week goes to... Robert Crawley! In a somewhat shocking twist, given that this episode also contained a) Branson and b) Ethel's son's terrible grandfather. But moustaches there is at least open about his awfulness, and Branson was less terrible than usual this week (I even almost bought his relationship with Sybil for about seven seconds), so Robert it is, for services to being rubbish whilst being entirely convinced of his own rightness and reasonableness.
- I do not care about Bates or his storyline at all. Not even a little. Can there please be another storyline for Anna to be involved in? I am edging perilously close to not caring about her either.
- Poor Daisy cannot catch a break, can she?
- I am officially Worried about where Thomas's storyline is going. I'm torn on him as a character - goodness knows I enjoy a pantomime villain (boo! hiss! etc.), but I really hate that their one gay character is also the most villainous of the regulars. At least give him some nuance.
- I really like how Isabel's being portrayed - she's clearly in the right, but her privileged position means she's also fairly oblivious to the fact that sometimes the most principled course is just not practical.
- At this point I also feel the need to register my love for Mrs Hughes (and her electric toaster). She is a credit to the surname. ♥
- I am excited about the "Edith discovers feminism" storyline! (But then I was also excited about the "Sybil discovers feminism" storyline in season one, and look where that ended up.) I also liked Matthew backing her up; I think I would enjoy their friendship.
- Violet can continue to get all the best lines, that is a good decision.
And now back to the blanket fort of dissertation denial.

Date: 8 Oct 2012 14:33 (UTC)For once I was actually kind of interested in what was going on with Bates, if only because I was sad for Anna, but yeah, I was so into them in season 1 and now I'm just... eh.
If they make the new guy another failed love interest for Thomas I will be Cross.

Date: 8 Oct 2012 21:05 (UTC)Even being sad for Anna isn't quite enough to get me interested in Bates's storylines nowadays. :( I just get distracted by reminiscing about that time she and Mary nearly ran away to America together. *nostalgia*
Me too, and the "next time" made it look like that was where it was going. BOO.

Date: 9 Oct 2012 08:10 (UTC)Yeah, I'm finding the Bates story very boring. They haven't done anything with him but show how miserable prisons were (not a surprise) and there are only two eps to go, right? I hope they wind it up soon.
