spinoff books, a couple of films
Monday, 26 March 2012 10:36I have read "DS9: Warpath"! (Some time ago now, this has been my "restore from saved draft" for a while.) Here, have some feelings about it. I will admit that I was grumpy from the start for reasons that were not entirely its fault, i.e. the fact that Kira and Ro were incapacitated at the end of the previous book (and remained so), but I was somewhat narked by the fact that a lot of the women in it seemed to be victims and/or sex objects, and that we didn't get much pov stuff for any of them. Pages and pages of Vaughn and Taran'atar (!) angsting about their various troubles, but nothing on, say, Ezri's feelings about being in charge of DS9 at a moment of crisis, and about her friends' lives being in danger? Pah. I was also annoyed alllll the way through at why we couldn't have Prynn riding (ok, piloting) to Vaughn's rescue, but the "get away from my father" bit sort of made up for it. But then, minus points for not getting Prynn's pov on their reunion. >:(
I was pretty interested in where the plot is going, though, and it is a pretty good read (some rather pretentious bits of prose aside), I just spent a bit too much time going "but whyyyyy" to be completely pro.
In other spinoffery news, I read Timeless, the last EDA with Eight, Fitz and Anji. They're my favourite TARDIS team and they've had some cracking stories, but as a last hurrah, by an author who's written other things I liked, this was a bit of a disappointment. For a start, it would've been nice to see more of our heroes, together or separately: the OCs were fine, but it's Anji's last book! I wanted more of her! I was spoiled for her departure, which was probably a good thing, as I got most of my "really? REALLY?" reaction out of the way ahead of time. Her leaving did make sense, I suppose, but adopting Chloe, not so much. I'm sure she'll be a great parent, since she's Anji, she's great at EVERYTHING, but it was a rather odd thing to have her do.
Plotwise, it was a bit of a mess - the Sabbath storyline feels like it's gone on too long at this point, and got a bit too mystic. D: To be fair, though, I read the book in little bits over quite a long time, which didn't really help it. And to end on a positive, I did love all the stuff at the beginning with Fitz's film, especially the Doctor belatedly realising he'd hurt Fitz's feelings by refusing to be in it and trying to make it up to him. ♥
Also I watched some films! Captain America left me cold, though I am glad I have now seen all the individual films in time for (Marvel) Avengers (Assemble) (or whatever it's called now). Chake De! India, on the other hand, I loved. Apparently I really enjoy films about teams of women working together to be tough and brilliant and happy? WHO KNEW.

Date: 28 Mar 2012 10:09 (UTC)I ADORED Thor. Seeing a trailer for it before Captain America probably didn't help: I wanted more excitement and humour and Darcy tasering people!
Black Widow! ♥ I am so annoyed she hasn't had her own film yet, it would be so brilliant.
