enough things for a post, right?
Tuesday, 28 February 2012 09:511. I am thinking about getting an ipod touch! But since I am incapable of making decisions on my own, I thought I would mention it here and see if anyone has any thoughts on why I should or shouldn't. The battery in my MP3 player is dying so I need a new one (...for a given value of "need", obvs) and I like the way the ipod touch seems to be like a iphone but without the phone part, and therefore without the monthly contract thing, which would be a waste of money given how much I generally spend on my phone. (I was trying to remember the last time I topped my current phone up and managed to narrow it down to "sometime after March 2008 but before Summer 2010". A while, basically.)
2. Continuing with reading the DS9 relaunch books, here are some thoughts on "Ferenginar", as it turns out I have a reasonable amount of them: Basically... meh. It was more or less fine, but I would have really liked to see more about what Ferenginar's new social order was like from the point of view of, well, any Ferengi women at all, really. I also have a very low tolerance for the smug "look at how sexist these silly people are, isn't it a good thing we're all enlightened now?" tone, especially given that some of the arguments various male Ferengi were using against women in the workplace sounded rather familiar. Was it David Willetts who came up with all that nonsense a while ago about how working class men are unemployed because FEMINISM? It was someone like that, anyway. (ETA, yep, it was Willetts. Well done, brain. Warning: clicking on that link may lead to rage.)
Another thing that really bothered me was the flippant way Zek's memory problems were handled. I haven't seen the last two seasons of DS9 since they were on the BBC lo these many years ago, so it's possible that's just how the show treated them, but still, I didn't like it. (The fact that I have also just read Lois McMaster Bujold's Memory may be influencing me here...)
Characterwise, I was sad that Rom didn't turn out to have much in the way of hidden depths. I was glad Ro was around and I loved that one scene she had with Leeta, but I thought her break-up with Quark was a little random.
I did quite enjoy it as I was reading it! But yeah, definitely had some issues.
3. I've been watching Justice League (Unlimited) and am pretty much in the "all the squee!" stage. :D It's so funny and lovely and happy making, and it makes me grin all the time. (Superman: Some of us need to work on our teamwork skills. *pointed look at Batman*) "Hereafter" was particularly great and caused me to have unexpected feelings, and the Christmas episode was just ADORABLE IN EVERY WAY. I haven't seen "Starcrossed" yet (Lovefilm is predicting a "short wait"), but have gone on with Unlimited regardless. I do like the shorter format - it's snappier, and sillier, though the latter may be unrelated - and the way it has ALL the characters. YAY! Happy happy happy.

Date: 1 Mar 2012 23:34 (UTC)Good point about Zek, and yeah, Rom is pretty much a moron in it which is a shame as we've seen that he actually has some pretty good ideas of his own sometimes.
The break-up! I was so annoyed. Can't remember if I already blogged about this bit, but, just... why? Like, Ro seems pragmatic and not overly romantic and whatever, I really can't believe she'd call it off just because he was still attracted to other women, or whatever flimsy excuse it was. What, if he's in love he's just not ever supposed to look at anyone else again?
I mean, I can see that maybe they'd wind up being incompatible in the long term (although the books really surprised me with how much I got behind this ship) but at that stage it seemed to be going really well, so this just seemed to come completely out of the blue...
(Also haven't had a chance to post office yet but hopefully Saturday!)

Yes! It makes no sense from a character point of view, and from a storytelling point of view it's such a let down - they spent so long building it up and making it work, it seems such a waste just to have them go "actually, on second thoughts, let's not." Argh.
*g* No hurry! Also, I'm at my parents this weekend and am going to grab "A Stitch In Time" - would you like me to put it in the post, or just hang onto it until I see you?

Date: 2 Mar 2012 20:53 (UTC)Yeah, it really makes me wonder why they did it in the first place if they were just going to shoot it down... although personally I think they thought better of it after and got back together...
Hmm, probably don't worry about it as I've promised Cara faithfully that I will read the whole of The Lord of the Rings before I think of picking up anything else...
