"I am a Kandy man of my word."
Thursday, 16 February 2012 15:31TELLY. First off, "The Happiness Patrol"!
- I had been wondering for a while whether "You'll feel the back of my kandy hand" was an actual quote or just a fandom joke. ...of course it was an actual quote, I don't know why I ever doubted it. ♥
- Lots of things I loved about this story; its terribly terribly subtle politics, the wild imagination, the SHEER CRACK, Ace running around being great. Good times.
- Seven was awesome in this one; the scene where he calls the guards' bluffs about shooting him was brilliant, not to mention "I can hear the sound of empires toppling". He had some great laid back moments too; jamming with his spoons, singing As Time Goes By, lovely.
- I really loved Ace trying to play the spoons for her Happiness Patrol audition! Aw. Also, her finishing off the TARDIS repainting was cute too.
Also, Voyager. I have got to the episodes I've seen! Last up was "Retrospect".
...yeah. I remember being inarticulately dissatisfied with "Retrospect" first time round and didn't like it this time either. It started off ok but then descended into "false allegations can ruin men's LIVES you know" in a rather dismaying way. Not to mention all the focus on the Doctor's pain: Seven got rather pushed aside by the end. I would also have liked an acknowledgement that, although it's understandable that she'd feel guilty about what happened, SHE didn't do anything wrong. Ugh.
Blah. I liked other episodes better, though! "Hunters" reminded me why I shipped Paris/Torres so much: I love that instead of spending the whole episode sulking about how the other didn't understaaaaand what they were each going through, they actually talked to each other about it straight away like grown ups. I am also pleased to see Torres wearing her "the actress is pregnant but the character not so much" Coat of Hiding; aw, nostalgia. ♥
And next up is "The Killing Game"; I loved that one so much first time round! (Let us hope I do not regret saying that in a public forum.) This may have been because in many ways it resembles a canon historical AU full of drama! and peril! and costumes! and so on.
BOOKS. (Though also slightly TELLY.)
cosmic_llin has been lending me the DS9 relaunch books and like her I liked them very much up to the end of Unity and then less so afterwards.
"Cardassia" I liked a lot: O'Briens! Garak! I had missed their faces. It was really nice to see the O'Briens following Keiko's career for a change and giving her a chance to shine. I also liked the dynamic between Miles and Garak; they're not exactly friends, but they're old soldiers with a lot of shared experience, which gives them a sort of camaraderie. ♥ *fangirls Una McCormack for a bit*
My main issue with "Andor" was that I didn't buy Shar/Prynn at all really. It was so out of the blue, and disappointingly heteronormative, and it really put me off the rest of the story, despite the fact that I am quite keen to learn more about Andor. :/
"Trill"... eh. It just didn't really work for me: I really liked the beginning, with Our Heroes hiking across a snowy plain in search of Clues, and was sad that we didn't get more of that.
I was put off "Bajor" a little when it started with a note explaining which chapters took place in which time period, but I did actually like it a fair bit despite that. Its main problem was the A-story, in which Jake saves a somewhat drippy Bajoran girl from her life of Sad, which dragged the whole thing down. On the other hand, I love getting to see more of Bajoran life, so I enjoyed all of that, and the DS9-y bits were great. (Not enough DS9 in my DS9 novels is apparently an issue that I am having.) I also liked the little hints at Opaka/Vaughn, a pairing that I would probably have been a little skeptical about if I'd just been told about, but found rather charming in execution.
A couple of little niggles with "Bajor": the mention of Prynn and Shar on the Defiant threw me a little, though it's possible I just missed a note about when "Andor" was set. I was also not entirely happy about the reference to Bashir's family in Sudan: the show was so careful about not doing anything like that, and I am also not sure how I feel about conflating Bashir's ethnicity with Alexander Siddig's. Hmmm.
And finally, tying together both the fandoms in this post,
such_heights is running a Star Trek/Doctor Who crossover fest YAY. It is in honour of the upcoming canon Doctor Who/TNG comics crossover, which I still cannot entirely believe is a real thing that is happening. TOO MUCH YAY TO BE BELIEVED.

The stuff about Bashir's family - I wondered if that was meant to lead somewhere as it seemed a bit out of nowhere... maybe it's relevant to something later?

Ooo, I hadn't thought about that, that could be interesting, depending on what they do with it! I was assuming it was just a throwaway line to explain his absence, but maybe not.

Date: 17 Feb 2012 17:33 (UTC)The Killing Game is one of my favourites, though. :-)
The Happiness Patrol is wonderful. I have to feel sorry for people who can't appreciate its true brilliance and think it's silly. That is v sad for them. I usually have to watch it again, straight away whenever I get around to it, because of how much I love it. And, BBC, why no DVD yet??! *sulks*
