I have changed ALL MY OPINIONS about Downton Abbey. (Disclaimer: this may be an exaggeration. Verging on a lie.)
In other news, term has just started and I am at that stage where I feel like I should be reading ALL the things but I'm not sure yet which things would be best to read. I don't want to leave everything til later in the term but I also don't want to race too far ahead of the lectures or anything. And I have NO IDEA what to write my dissertation on. Well, OK, I do have some ideas, but they are NEBULOUS and RUBBISH.
- I have actually changed my mind about shipping Sybil/Branson, turns out I only really liked it as part of Sybil/Gwen/Branson. Also I did not like how pushy Branson was in this episode, and how he dismissed all the things that were important to her. I loved that Sybil pointed out that running away with him would be very romantic and all, but she'd miss her family and her career, so it's not exactly a decision she's going to make on the spur of the moment.
- ...when did Edith get awesome? I approve of this development, I enjoy liking as many characters as possible.
- Mary's scenes with all her relatives were so great.
- I sort of unexpectedly shipped Bates/Lord Grantham in that one scene where Bates is in the bar and he turns round and there is LORD GRANTHAM and the music swells and there are emotions all over the place. Tell me that wasn't just me?
- I still ship Mary/Matthew a lot but whenever they look at each other in their way I feel all sad for the other woman whose name I have temporarily forgotten, so I am transferring some of my affections to Mary/Anna instead. Yes. (Adding to this, that bit where she's singing at the concert and he turns up and everyone is LOOKING AT THEM AND THEIR LOVE really hit my embarrassment squick. D:)
- Oh, Mrs Pattmore, stop trying to make William/Daisy happen! It would be a good match and all, but she doesn't want to marry him.

Date: 11 Oct 2011 21:49 (UTC)And I'm really, really impressed with the way the show has taken me from TEAM GO AWAY EDITH to TEAM EDITH in about a week. And I have some thoughts about how she, more than her sisters, is really a person who needs work. Sybil could find a place for herself in any situation, and Mary seems able to make her own fun. Edith doesn't have the same resources as the other two, but she blossoms when she has a task and a purpose.
Not that I've seen 2x3 yet! Possibly all my theories have fallen apart as Downton is attacked by zombies and the Dowager Countess and Violet come to terms with their Sapphic passions and elope! But that doesn't seem like the most likely option.

Well, now I know what I'm hoping for in this week's episode! :D

Date: 12 Oct 2011 21:25 (UTC)I'm worried about Edith because every time they set up something nice for her it comes crashing down. Really hoping this one sticks!
Ah, the bromance! That was an adorable moment!
The thing that's making me cross at the moment is the whole Isobel and Cora fight. Like, I feel like the writing had to make both of them really unreasonable for that to even work. Not pleased. Come back Isobel!

Yeah, even with the leftover tension from last week, that felt very forced. :/
