mmm, skience
Monday, 13 June 2011 11:32Have signed up for
ladiesbigbang! I'm planning to do a sort of multi-category, multi-fandom thing, including a vid, about fictional female scientists. I'm starting to think about source footage and was wondering if any of you lovely people had any ideas for characters I really should include? So far I have two lists, one of characters who I'm sure I will definitely be able to find footage for, and one of characters who are distinct possibilities, and I would love to hear thoughts on either list and on people I've missed off. ♥ (I have decided, somewhat arbitrarily, that I'm not counting doctors unless they're doing specifically research medicine, sort of thing. This is mostly so I don't have to clip ALL of E.R.)
Probably in
Doctor Who: Zoe, Liz, Romana, Amelia Rutherford, Nyssa, Anne Travers, The TARDIS, the Rani
Star Trek: Jadzia Dax, Seven of Nine, B'Elanna Torres
Jake 2.0: Diane Hughes, Fran Yoshida
Firefly: Kaylee
Angel: Fred
Bones: Brennan and Angela
Fringe: Astrid Farnsworth
SJA: Sarah and Maria welding
X-Files: Scully
Veronica Mars: Mac
Torchwood: Tosh
Buffy: Willow, Maggie Walsh. (I may also include that bit from "Goodbye Iowa" where Buffy disguises herself as a scientist, though this is probably cheating.)
SG1: Sam (if anyone could point me in the direction of any episodes that are particularly heaving on Sam doing science-y things I would be very grateful; there's a lot of SG1 and most of it I haven't seen!)
SGA: Miko
Possibly in
Doctor Who: Mel
Star Trek: Beverly, Pulaski, Kes, Keiko O'Brien (do we ever actually see her doing any botany?)
SG1/SGA: Janet, Elizabeth Weir, Jennifer Keller
Gilmore Girls: do we ever see Rory or Paris in a science lab at Chiltern?
Harry Potter: Hermione (potions totally count as science! Sort of.)
Andromeda: do Trance or Rommie ever do anything visibly science-y, or is that always left to Harper?
Blake's 7: Cally? I have a vague memory of her doing experiments at some point, but may have made this up.
Primeval?
Bond ladies! Wikipedia suggests Holly Goodhead (Moonraker), Christmas Jones (The World Is Not Enough) and Natalya Simonova (Goldeneye)
If I am counting doctors doing research, then Meredith's clinical trials could go in too.

Date: 13 Jun 2011 11:08 (UTC)Helen Magnus from Sanctuary would also be a good one to include. As far as Sam Carter goes... most episodes that take place even partly on-base, there'll be a scene with her looking at the computer... and I'm sure a couple of times she and Janet have skienced together... possibly Rite of Passage? Maybe Space Race for messing with technology?

Ooo, awesome, I didn't even think of them having scenes together, thank you!
(And thank you for suggesting that Dandy Warhols song, by the way - I think it is just what I was looking for!)

Date: 14 Jun 2011 20:50 (UTC)And yay for the song!

Date: 13 Jun 2011 11:57 (UTC)Also, Helen Magnus does LOTS of scientific stuff in Sanctuary - I can, if you require, point you at specific scenes/episodes. (I'm just coming towards the end of a re-watch of the whole of the three seasons so far aired...)
Also Claudia and Myka in Warehouse 13. (They're not strictly scientists but they do Skience-y stuff sometimes...)

And thank you for the other suggestions too - v. pleased that I'll have an excuse to include Martha after all! :D

Date: 13 Jun 2011 17:54 (UTC):D I am glad you accepted the Martha suggestion. (It's such a crying shame she has so few of those moments!)

*nods* Thank you for reminding me - I was very sad to think I'd have to exclude her...

Date: 13 Jun 2011 12:31 (UTC)Also, Farscape - Zhaan does a lot of science-ing! And is blue, and awesome. Yes.
no subject
Date: 13 Jun 2011 17:52 (UTC)And thank you! I didn't watch much of Farscape, but I do remember Zhaan being awesome. :)

Date: 13 Jun 2011 21:42 (UTC)I don't remember Cally doing experiments, and Elizabeth Weir was really a diplomat/negotiator then commander. Sam Carter blowing up a sun? :-) Another I can think of is Temple Brennan from Bones though I don't watch it. Ooh, and Claudia Donovan from Warehouse 13! Young and very cute.

Date: 14 Jun 2011 09:13 (UTC)I thought Elizabeth was an anthropologist or something as well as a diplomat? But on second thoughts that may not be right! Brennan is definitely going in, I love her, and you're the second person to recommend Claudia so I'll most likely be including her too, thank you!

Date: 14 Jun 2011 03:38 (UTC)I think Hermione doing Potions counts. At the very least, she approaches it like a science, you know?
I'm curious as to what clips of the TARDIS you would use to show her as a scientist? Or do you mean the human!TARDIS from The Doctor's Wife?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. And it is treated more or less like chemistry!
Or do you mean the human!TARDIS from The Doctor's Wife?
Yep, that's what I meant! I'm hoping there'll be something usable in that scene where she and Eleven are building themselves a console room.
