Vidukon con report and recs!
Wednesday, 13 April 2011 11:18(Warning: I am probably going to overuse the word "awesome" in this post.)
I had a really great time at VidUKon and met many lovely people, some of whom I was too shy to talk to properly, because I am rubbish like that. /o\
Moving on from my general failings... I met up with
carawj,
cosmic_llin,
silly_cleo and
tellitslant on the train, which was an excellent way to start the weekend! Once we'd checked in, we went up to
halcyon_shift's room party and watched vids until we were too sleepy to watch any more.
Programming started at ten on Saturday morning with the Made In The UK vidshow! Really great show overall: I particularly loved
frenya's Primeval vid, never gonna stop, and
chaiyana's hilarious Merlin vid, 9 to 5, as well as Private Goes Public by
tearful_eye (L&O:UK) and
dreamrequiem's Rome vid The Rules of Mice and Men (both gorgeous), and
odessie's incredibly charming Moving Right Along (Doctor Who), but my absolute favourite was
isagel's I Wanna Hold Your Hand (Wire In The Blood). Trust me, you want to watch this vid. Even if you know absolutely nothing about Wire In The Blood. (I don't either.) It will be worth it.
carawj,
id_doomer,
silly_cleo,
tellitslant and I skipped the first panel and went out into the lovely Cardiff sunshine to find foods and ice creams and also the Ianto shrine, which is huge. Then we came back to the hotel for the River Song Appreciation room party, which was awesome: we watched River vids and squeed about her and about season 6, and tried to decide what the best thing about her is. I think the consensus ended up being "we like it when she exists" which seems about right.
Next up was the AU/Crossover panel, which had lots of interesting discussions about things like different types of AU and crossover vids, and different audiences and what they bring to watching this sort of vid (for example, people who know or don't know the canon(s) - sometimes lack of canon knowledge could make a vid more accessible or, if the vid spins off from a particular canon development and considers how it might have gone differently, you'd need to know the canon to get the full impact of the vid. Or if it's a vid based on a fanfic or an RPG, your reaction to it might vary depending on your familiarity with the source). There was also a good debate on at what point vids for non-canon pairings become AU vids.
Then was the A Woman's Worth vidshow, which got off to an excellent start with two vids I already loved:
kaydeefalls's Stray Italian Greyhound and
beccatoria's there's a war going on for your mind, sarah (Sarah Connor Chronicles). Other vids I particularly loved in this show included two Merlin vids:
astolat's Morgana vid Watershed and
sweetestdrain's Make Something Good, which gets me right in my heart (I accidentally typed hearts first time. NB I am not actually a Time Lord);
scifi_tv_addict's Whedonverse vid So What, so much fun; and
sisabet's Folding Chair (Annie, Community, which I think I should be watching)
Next was the Vidding vs. Time panel, which was great: there was a lot of discussion on different vidders' methods, and as a non-vidder (...well, I have abouttwelve twenty seconds worth of vid now), it was very interesting to get an insight into the different ways people go about turning an idea into a vid. I almost skipped this panel due to tiredness but I'm very glad I didn't - it demystified the vidding process a lot.
After the break was the non-canon couples vidshow. A really great mix of vids here! I already knew I loved
jarrow's Learn to Crawl (BSG, Starbuck/Kat) and
bradcpu's Lightning Field (LotS, Cara/Kahlan), so it was great to see them on the big screen. New-to-me vids I liked included:
gigglemonster's Palindromes (Fringe, Olivia/Charlie),
kiki_miserychic's Spit the Devil (V, Anna/Erica) and
bubbleforest's We Shout (Harry Potter, Harry/Luna), which was a lovely note to end the show on.
I skipped the Colouring and Texture panel, as I needed to go and collapse for a bit and thought it might be a bit too technical for me (not a criticism, btw, I think it's good to have a mix of panels so there's something for everyone, and to be honest I was flagging a bit by this point so was quite glad of the opportunity for a rest!), so was reasonably refreshed for the Festivids vidshow. I watched a lot of festivids, but there was only one in the whole show that I'd seen before:
dualbunny's The Owl Moans Low (Lost in Austen, Amanda/Caroline), which I really love. Other highlights included:
bironic's They Want More (hilarious Jurassic Park vid) and the two Clue vids, Another One Bites The Dust by Suburban Noir and But Here's What Really Happened by
cee_m, which made an awesome pair despite being made by different vidders (I've never seen Clue, should I?).
Premieres! Awesomeness. Some of my favourites:
Blue Caravan by
such_heights (Doctor Who; Amy/Doctor, Amy/Rory) Beautiful and heartbreaking. I was completely mesmerised by it.
The Many Faces of Richard Castle by
jagwriter78 I don't watch Castle, but as you know, Bob, I am a fan of people making silly faces, and this fun, relaxed vid delivered in spades. ♥
Fascination by
charmax (Billy Eliot) So delightful!
Small Blue Thing by
beccatoria (Fringe) Amazing vid, with some gorgeous imagery. I think I shall be rewatching this one a lot (especially after I have caught up with season 2 and 3...)
Secret Agent by
cosmic_llin (Women of Star Trek) I LOVE THIS VID SO MUCH. it just gets awesomer every time I watch it. ♥
When I Fall Asleep by
buffyann (Doctor Who) So so lovely and full of wonder! ♥

Got up bright and early on Sunday morning for
carawj's and
tellitslant's femslash vidshow! :DDD This was probably my favourite show of the con and I recommend ALL the vids. Seriously, I was going down the list picking out ones to rec, and it was indeed every vid. Watch them all! ♥
Next up was the epic bromance vidshow. The first two vids in this show (
absolutedestiny's Running Away (Son of Rambow) and
talitha78's Volare (How to Train Your Dragon)) were both adorable, and I also really loved seeing
dualbunny's ridiculously fun Legend of the Seeker vid If I Had You on the big screen.
The last thing before lunch was the process of elimination panel which, again, was a very good discussion. It covered things like clip choice in general, admitting when a clip isn't working, the importance of having and listening to a good beta (this came up a lot), audio editing, and some other stuff that I have forgotten about because my memory is terrible.
After lunch it was robot time! The vidshow was awesome and, as with the femslash one, I recommend watching everything! It was really well put together, too, so I especially recommend watching it all in order. Particular favourites were
cosmic_llin's Machine (Voyager) and
rhivolution's Resistance (First Contact), both of which I've recced before, and I also really liked
dualbunny's I Want What I Want (Bionic Woman) and, of course,
thingswithwings's Inadvisable Interpersonal Relationship (SJA, K-9/Mr Smith). If you didn't watch that last one when I linked it in
soniclipstick on Monday, go and watch it now!
The accompanying panel was great too; there was a lot of general discussion on robots and cyborgs and androids (oh my) in the media, what they represent, what it is about them that's frightening, and so on. There was also some discussion about vidding robot points of view, which was interesting too.
The final vidshow was the squee one, which was a fantastic way to end the con. ♥ Lots of lovely joyful vids!
mamoru's Cartoon Heroes (SG1 and SGA) was tons of fun, as was
jarrow's Paul McCartney (Will and Grace), and
talitha78's "White" and Nerdy made me want to watch Psych (because Dulé Hill's face). I also really loved
danegen's Bend (women + vehicles = awesomeness) and
leanwellback's Tik Tok (Toy Story). All the multifandom dance vids were awesome, and I don't think I will ever get tired of
counteragent's Destiny Calling or
lim's Us.
In conclusion: that was fantastic, I can't wait for the next one!

Yes! YES! Everyone should be watching!!! \o/ 'Folding Chair' played so brilliantly to a con audience, it was a definite highlight for me too.
Loved reading your report--thank you for sharing your experiences and for being part of making the con such a success.
