some words about things, mostly Downton Abbey
Monday, 8 November 2010 11:201) Happy birthdays to
elyssadc and
persiflage_1!
2) Have finished first piece of coursework, exciting. Though by "finished" I mean "have got the IT IS TERRIBLE BUT I DO NOT CARE ANY MORE stage". Er, it is probably not terrible. Most of the spelling is more or less right. My attitude to grammar and punctuation is a little more intuitive than technical ("I feel in my HEART that a semicolon is required") but this seems to have served me well so far in my life.
3) Downton Abbey finished last night. I am not entirely sure what I thought of it; I did enjoy it a lot, but some of the editing was a bit odd (a lot of scenes finished rather abruptly) and I didn't think it did a very good job of showing time passing - I was rather surprised to find that two years had passed, it felt more like two months. I have other opinions but they are spoilery, hence a cut. The one other thing I really didn't like: did they really have to make The Evil Footman and The Gay Footman the same character? Depressing. (I am not counting attempting to blackmail whatshisname in episode one among the Evilitude, that was in my opinion an entirely proportionate response to the situation). William punching him inna face was terribly satisfying, though. On the positive side, all the characters were great and Maggie Smith was of course awesome, as was Penelope Wilton. Also, the whole thing was SO PRETTY! Sybil is adorable. I shipped Mary/Matthew QUITE A BIT and was rather sad that things didn't/haven't yet worked out for them. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I SHIP WHAT I'M SUPPOSED TO.

Date: 8 Nov 2010 20:14 (UTC)Since they managed to cover two years in one season, three seasons could conceivably take us to the end of WW1. I predict that Matthew will join the army as an officer and be horribly traumatised, while Mary nurses soldiers and develops a profession, so that by the end of the war, they will be in a position to face the slow deconstruction of the manor house society.
Also, Sybil will run away to drive ambulances in France, where she'll be reunited with the Irish chauffeur and they'll live happily ever after in socialist bliss. PLEASE I HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT!

Date: 9 Nov 2010 09:39 (UTC)They were definitely playing the "Mary needs something to do with her life" angle, so yeah, that sounds about right.

I will be SO DISAPPOINTED if this doesn't happen now!

Date: 8 Nov 2010 11:47 (UTC)Heehee! I shipped Anna/Bates - that looks like it might work out very well indeed! :D
Actually we knew two years had passed last week - it was May 1914 at the start of last week's episode.
William punching Thomas made me CHEER!! And it looks like Evil O'Brien might actually have got enough of a shock to change her ways.
You know, I'm up for beta-reading essays as well - if you're at all interested. :D

Date: 8 Nov 2010 13:46 (UTC)Must've missed that, was probably knitting! It was about halfway through last week's episode where someone said something about having known Matthew for a couple of years and I went "wait, what?". It seems to have been the same season all the way through, which threw me off.
It went something like this, in my brain: "Go on William, punch him." *punching occurs* "YES."
Ooo, that would be great, if you don't mind! It's a report rather than an essay, so I don't know how interesting it would be to read...
