Giant vid recs post, part the first
Thursday, 9 September 2010 15:48OK, this only represents... a third? maybe? of the ever increasing number of vids I want to rec, but I said I'd post this months ago, so have decided that I should just post the recs I've written up now and do a vid recs post part two ...eventuallyish. (Also in my plan for the future: actually get round to leaving comments on all the vids I like. *guilt*) Sorted by fandoms for ease of findingness.
Ashes to Ashes/Life on Mars
The Wizard and I -
chasarumba (A2A S1) This starts off as a fun, playful vid, with a few hints of something darker at the "no father is not proud of you" bit, but as soon as we hit "unlimited... my future's unlimited", the balance shifts in a way that works really well. There's also some really excellent bits of timing, and I love the way the whirly footage at the beginning works with the whirly bits of the music. Whirly is a technical term, just so you know. Yes.
Glittering Cloud -
yorunohime This pre-series finale vidlet captures perfectly that feeling of being on the brink of knowing what's going on.
Alcohol -
ohvienna A salute to Alex's season one coping strategies.
Buffyverse
Boulevard of Broken Songs –
shati Great vid about the slayers - I really liked the way the different songs were used, and the overlaying of the students fighting in "Graduation" and the new slayers in "Chosen".
Superstar and Come On –
heresluck (Buffy/Faith) Two very different vids, which is impressive given that they're by the same vidder, to songs by the same artists, covering similar ground. Superstar is faster, all about Faith's sometimes desperate defiance, whereas Come On looks at Faith as outsider, wanting to belong to Buffy and her inner circle, but never quite making it. The way the fight scenes from "Graduation" and "This Year's Girl" are intercut is particularly good.
I Put You There –
laurashapiro and
halcyon_shift (Giles) This is utterly charming - it's not so much about Giles as it is about fangirl behaviour, and it never fails to make me grin.
I Just Wanna Live -
shoopdancer (seasons 1-3) "That's exactly how it happened." Fun early-Buffy vid - great song choice!
There's A Kind Of "Hush" -
trelkez Nice, creepy "Hush" vid.
Firefly
Small Blue Thing –
shati Really nice River POV vid.
Defying Gravity –
y_fish (River, Zoe, Kaylee, Inara) This vid just makes me happy. I love the choice of clips - not all the obvious ones - and the length of some of them: although I LOVE fast cutting in vids, it's nice to see vids pull off a slower pace from time to time too.
Made Up Love Song #43 -
such_heights Gorgeous Kaylee vid, all about how much love there is in her life.
Ordinary Day -
swannee ("Serenity" - the episode rather than the film!) This vid does a great job of capturing the feel of the episode, and is fun to watch!
Leverage
Good Idea At The Time –
halcyon_shift Perfect song for Leverage, yes? This vid grew and grew on me the more I watched it.
I'mma Be –
talitha78 (Hardison/Parker/Eliot) This vid is really great. It's very well edited - the clips keep pace with the song perfectly.
Tick Tock -
wyomingnot Fun team vid.
And Parker Was -
wyomingnot Oh Parker! ♥
Star Trek
We Go Together -
such_heights (Star Trek XI) Ahaha, this is such a fun vid. I particularly love the bit with them all taking it in turns to race around corners.
Good In My Head -
meddow (DS9) Really good Kira vid - this captures her character very well.
Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles
Howl (Jesse/Derek, Jesse/Riley), The Queen (Sarah) and Wonderland (Ellison) by
beccatoria Really excellent set of vids here; the song choices for all three are great and the editing (timing, clip choice etc) works very well.
The Whoniverse
Pull Shapes –
such_heights Really adorable Rose vidlet!
Rockstars –
lizbee (RTD era companions) Awesome companions are awesome! I love the opening of this vid a lot, and the whole thing has a wonderful feeling of breathless energy.
On Your Wings –
some_stars (Ace) Dreamy, spooky, beautiful.
Pure Imagination –
chasarumba (Eleven, Amy) Lovely fairytale vid, with just the right amount of creepiness.
The Eleventy Project -
fan_eunice Post-ep vids for every season five episode up to "Vincent and the Doctor"; they're all good, but I particularly enjoyed Twilight Omens ("Vampires of Venice") and the creepy I ("Amy's Choice)
What About Everything -
calapine All of Doctor Who, in vid form. ♥ I really like the little stories within the vid - the Sarah and Brigadier sections - and the timing of the cuts, especially at "sharpens the blade".
Miscellaneous fandoms
Whatever It Takes –
fan_eunice (Bend It Like Beckham) I just want to draw hearts around this vid!
Jack, or Adventures in Reading Against the Text –
some_stars (Heroes; Niki, Claire, Monica) Takes the women of Heroes and reframes their stories to place them in the centre. I found Heroes very frustrating: this vid shows what it could have been.
Use It –
sisabet and
cappylicious (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) This is basically the entire film condensed into vid form, and I love it.
Bedtime Story -
hollywoodgrrl (Legend of the Seeker) Trippy dream sequence style vid, with some great images.
Wake Up –
arefadedaway (The Middleman; Wendy Watson) Lovely quirky, hopeful character vid.
Untitled –
giandujakiss (Sherlock Holmes 2009) This is sort of what I imagine the inside of Holmes's head must be like. I love the timing, and the way the pace just keeps building and building.
Punk Rocker -
kuwdora (Stargate: SG1; Sam) Lovely celebration of Sam - of all the Sams, in all the different universes.
Multifandom
I Enjoy Being A Girl –
absolutedestiny (Buffy Summers, Zoe, Starbuck, Sydney Bristow, Veronica Mars) I really like the way this vid plays with ideas of gender and gender performance, both by undermining the lyrics (not all women have "ivory shoulders", to take the most obvious example) and with its reminders that just because something is stereotypically girly, that doesn't mean it has to be frivolous: look at Veronica and Buffy talking on the telephone for hours with. Plus, it's really tightly edited and tremendous fun.
Glorious –
such_heights I just love this. I love the way it sweeps and builds, and the fact that it celebrates how wonderful these women and their stories are, whilst also criticising what canon does to (some of) them. I particularly love the last section, from the shot of Starbuck zooming out, laughing, in her Viper, onwards.
One Girl Revolution –
arefadedaway This is just a whole lot of fun. Look at all those women! Look at how great they all are! ♥
Wild Child –
calapine Another "women are awesome!" vid! One of the things I particularly like about this one is the song choice - it's quieter than the previous two, and it's got a lovely serene quality to it that I love.
What About –
fizzyblogic Yet another awesome women vid! (Not planning to get tired of this genre any time soon.) This is the vid that got me watching Leverage; it's really upbeat and optimistic, and I love it.
The Fear –
hazelk (Firefly, Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse; Summer Glau's characters) I think there are some things about this vid that I don't quite get, because I haven't seen Summer Glau's episodes of Dollhouse (and don't intend to), but I think it works really well all the same, paralleling her roles in SCC and Firefly, with some lovely metanarrative touches - the vid uses backstage footage, shots of scripts and trailers etc very well.
Still Rolling -
fizzyblogic (gag reels) I have a ridiculous amount of love for gag reels, and this vid just sums up why they are so great. Excellent song choice, too!

Date: 10 Sep 2010 01:21 (UTC)I found those Faith vids by heresluck a long long time ago and then my computer crashed and they were gonneee and I had no back-up of all these awesome vids. Which is to say I'm really glad you rec'ed them because now I have them again! :)
And somehow, I hadn't branched into looking for Leverage vids yet and now I am going to have to because these were all awesome! Oh, Parker/Hardison/Eliot!
If you like women are aweosme vids, you should also check out Cold Cold Water, it's an amazingly beautiful work about Starbuck and her psyche. Also, there's the Tenth Doctor Musical if you haven't already seen it. It is too awesome for words.

Ooo, I will definitely check out that BSG vid, thank you! I stopped watching sometime around the middle of season two, but I always really loved Starbuck. And the Tenth Doctor Musical is fantastic!
