This weekend I mostly watched sci-fi. FROM A PREVIOUS MILLENNIUM.
Some of it was Deep Space Nine:
Family Business: hmmm. The problem I have with the "look at how sexist the Ferengi are, tee hee!" stuff is that I'm not sure we're advanced enough ourselves to be throwing stones. OK, so we don't prevent women from wearing clothes and earning profit, but there are still plenty of people who think that a woman's default place is in the home. I did guffaw loudly at the bit where Odo, Bashir and O'Brien confessed to Sisko that EVERYONE knows Jake is trying to set him up with Kasidy Yates, though.
Facets: I did like this episode, though it felt a little jumbled. The first half seemed to meander a bit, up until the Sisko-as-Joran scenes where it suddenly worked out where it was going. It was fun to see Bashir and O'Brien doing exciting new accents, and although Dax's friendship with Leeta felt a little pasted on I was still glad to see it. Jadzia standing up to Curzon was excellent but I really didn't like the reveal that he washed her out because he was in love with her - it somewhat takes away from her achievement in being the only Trill to have reapplied successfully after being washed out.
The Adversary: a nicely tense, low-key finale. "You're too late. We're everywhere." Very chilling! I did wonder at first why Odo didn't tell the others about the blood tests straight away, but I suppose he might not have thought of it until he saw Sisko's blood. I liked the way they tried to avoid having a big "you weren't in the Jeffries tubes? IT MUST HAVE BEEN A CHANGELING!!!1!" moment, with the pan from Bashir and O'Brien to Dax scanning the Ambassador, but I don't think the execution quite came off, alas.
Next is The Way of the Warrior, hurray! I remember thinking it was a cracking episode first time round (though this may also have had something to do with how long it had been since I'd seen any DS9) so hopefully I will like it as much this time too. It will be nice to see it without the brown tint that the TV we had in my second year house added. (When Claire dyed her hair blue in Six Feet Under, I only knew she'd done it because it was mentioned in the dialogue.)
Also there was Doctor Who.
The Time Monster: here are some things I wrote down whilst I was watching it, cleaned up and edited a little -
- "And all that Cretan jazz" ILU JO.
- "In a dream. Not half an hour ago!" Well, now we know the dream was only half an hour ago, that makes all the difference.
- LOL at how smug the Brig looked to be carrying off poor hapless Benton.
- More people should wear bowler hats, I feel.
- Why did the Doctor build his TARDIS-sniffer-outer to measure things in Venusian miles? (Other than so he and Jo could have that adorable conversation, that is.) And, more importantly, did no one at any point in the prop design process go "hang on, that looks a bit dodgy, maaaaaybe we should consider making it a different shape?"
- HEE, speeded up Bessie!
- The scene with the Master doing some calculations and the hypnotised Dr Percival on the phone is weirdly cosy. "I'll get on with my sums."
- I love the segues! "Kronos, I await your call!"/*the UNIT phone rings*
- "Oh lor', I'm forgetting my patient. See you, sergeant!" Jo's phone conversation with Benton is adorable.
- Ruth is a bit of a Liz substitute, y/n? About Time reckons everyone finds her annoying, but I rather like her.
- Yay for Benton outwitting the Master! And it nearly worked, too...
- I love how the Master is entirely unimpressed by Krasis.
- Sandwiches = v. important component of Doctor Who.
- "For a so-called member of the dominant sex, you're remarkably feeble." I cannot help but agree with Ruth here.
- Oh, I do love all the Three 'n' Jo scenes in this one: they are really sweet, Jo comes off very well and the Doctor manages not to patronise her (much).
- (To Benton) "You just stand there and look pretty." Yes, I definitely love Ruth.
- The daisiest daisy speech! ♥ Such a lovely scene.
- Ooo, I love Galleia's green and white dress!
- OH JO. Saving the world whatever the consequence for herself, when even the Doctor couldn't. And marvellously matter of fact about it: "I'm fine. Dead, of course, but I'm fine."
- Yay for Ruth saving UNIT on her own!
- UNEXPECTED NAKED BENTON IS... expected, actually, but still brilliant. :D
The Three Doctors: I did not realise how much I missed Two until there he was, in GLORIOUS TECHNICOLOUR. He and Benton were so pleased to see each other! ♥ I also admired Benton's expression when left to guard the antimatter thing, very expressive. "Join the army, they said. Thrills and spills, they said. At no point was anything ever mentioned about standing guard over an antimatter thing that might come back to life and eat you, whilst your commanding officer wanders off to consult with an alien who keeps changing his face and your men try and fend off RICE KRISPIE MONSTERS. BAH." I also say yay! for Jo being treated like the full member of UNIT she is, I love it when the writers remember that. Oh and here is a quote I liked: "Nobble him? You're talking about one of the most powerful "blokes" in the cosmos? Nobble him?"
There was Blake's 7 and Babylon 5, but I do not feel moved to pass comment on either at this time. Off now to watch an episode of B5 that I have never seen before, exciting stuff.

Why don't I have a DS9 icon, why?

Date: 14 Sep 2009 20:52 (UTC)I really liked Facets and The Adversary (it's DS9 doing The Thing!), especially the latter because it was excellent set-up for things to come. The Way of the Warrior should definitely be as cracking as you remember it - it's completely fantastic and really sets up the second "phase" of DS9 brilliantly (I like to divide the series by Sisko with hair and no goatee and Sisko without hair and with goatee, because I'm lame).
A confession: I haven't seen The Time Monster. I don't feel too bad about that because I found most of season nine a bit... er... I don't like to be too harsh on entire seasons of Doctor Who, so I'll just say I only liked Day of the Daleks and leave it at that. Season 10 is quite good, though! Carnival of Monsters is deeply, deeply fab and I'll always have a soft spot for The Green Death.

What's weird is that whenever DS9 does non-Ferengi comedy episodes they tend to be rather good, like the classic Trials and Tribble-ations and Take Me Out to the Holosuite (this one seems to divide people but I laughed merrily throughout and don't care one single iota about baseball).
