- On the US healthcare debate: the more I read the more horrified I am. The NHS may not be perfect but at least the principle - that everyone has a right to healthcare regardless of income - is sound. Here is something from the Guardian on the subject: "My most significant childhood memory is knowing exactly how much I cost, and regretting the expense."

- Old news, I know, but I have things to say about it: Alesha Dixon to replace Arlene Phillips on Strictly Come Dancing. I do like Alesha Dixon, but the fact remains that she doesn't have the knowledge and experience that Arlene Phillips does, and it seems like the BBC is essentially saying "never mind all that, they're both women and therefore interchangeable, right?" Not to mention the dubiousness of replacing a women in her sixties with one who's just turned thirty. I used to like Strictly but I do not think I shall be watching it any more.

- Stargate: Universe spoilers, of a sort that have entirely killed off any interest I might have had in actually watching it. sheafrotherdon has lots of posts unpicking all the problems with this; I just want to add that I find the "it's an early draft" thing a bit troubling, as it smacks of suggesting that prejudice is totally fine as long as you only think it in private.

This is a very depressing post.

Well, prejudice is less not fine if you only think it and don't enact it, if you see what I mean. It's better to think a wrong thing and not do it, than to both think and do a wrong thing.

Oh yes, I definitely agree with that! But I don't like the idea that the initial prejudiced thought needs to be tidied up for public consumption, rather than revised because it was wrong, which is the sense I get a bit from the "it was a first draft" excuse. I'm not sure I'm explaining it very well, though!

Ahh, I see. You are quite rightly concerned that it's being slipped by the audience rather than acknowledged as Something I Believe In That's Not Necessarily Right And Should Be Left Out by the originator, amirite?

I find the stage of the episode development in which this was leaked to be interesting. We don't normally see anything until much latter even after filming when it's too late let alone this early. So maybe some one behind the scenes was pissed enough to get the scrutiny spotlight shinning this early in the game.

The defenders are insisting that it is in the earliest stages and we should wait to see how it actually turns out before being critical. I say best to be critical at the start, heading off at the pass, so they don't screw up to start with. Once filmed it's to late and they have already gotten away with being asshats.

I sort of wonder if they're exaggerating how early a draft it is whilst doing some frantic rewriting - I seem to remember seeing the words "final draft" floating round at some point, though I can't remember where.
