- I have not seen "The Lodger" yet due to Technical Difficulties -
agapi42 and I were intending to go to an outdoor screening of it, but when we got there their box was broken so no Doctor Who for us. Instead we met up with my friend Rhiannon (who was also intending to watch Doctor Who but had been slightly delayed when she stumbled across an unconscious man with a nosebleed lying on the pavement), went for a nice meal and then caught the second half of Bridget Jones's Diary, so it was nevertheless a good evening.
- Am just really behind on telly stuffs in general, due to SUNSHINE. I haven't seen this week's
b7rewatch episode yet, though we are now onto ones that I haven't seen before. I did watch last week's episode, "Moloch", last night, and, er, less said about that the better, I think, though I did enjoy Vila and Servalan bickering. Also, I want to watch more Legend of the Seeker, and next up on my Doctor Who watch is "City of Death", and Rhiannon lent me season three of The West Wing and I should really finish that and return it, and I am halfway through the second season of The Wire, and and and... What I really need is more hours in the day. Could someone arrange that for me please? Thanks.
- My love for Radio 4 is well documented, but I also feel the need to proclaim my love for Radio 7, which is also great. At the moment I am listening to: the early seasons of Old Harry's Game, which I missed first time round; lots of Dorothy L. Sayers (Gaudy Night starts on Friday!); season three of the New Eighth Doctor Adventures ("The Scapegoat" is up next, and so far I think this season has been excellent.). They are also broadcasting repeats of a lot of old children's programmes that aired on Radio 4 in the early nineties, which is causing a lot of JOYFUL FLAILING in people who are me. This week it is Time Hops, which I am very excited to relisten to, as I liked it so much the first time round. (The subject line is a quote from same which has stuck in my brain for about a decade.) It has a mouse scientist from the future, a killer bunny rabbit ditto, the Great Fire of London ("We did this in primary school! This isn't any old fire, it's the Great Fire of London!" Just think what else I could've stored in that bit of brainspace) and more time travel shenanigans than you can shake a stick at.
- Icon meme!
1. Reply to this post, and I will pick six of your icons. (unless you tell me not to bother!)
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.

"The Book of the Still" has such a beautiful cover: all those blues and golds! I'm still not entirely happy with the crop on this icon, but I love the way the detail of writing stands out.

[keywords: lovely two]
I think the keywords say it all, really. Lovely Two! I like this image because it shows his serious side, too, though I wish I'd made it a little lighter. (I often think this; possibly the screen on my laptop is a bit weird.)

There is NOTHING about this icon that does not make me happy. From the look of sheer contentment on Paul McGann's face, to the idea that maybe that whole time war thing could have been avoided with MORE HUGS (or possibly that Eight precipitated it by hugging one too many Daleks (DO NOT HUG ME! KEEP AWAY! KEEP AWAY!)), it is all good.

[keywords: underwater menace]
Polly! So pretty. I like the sort of misty effect on this one, and also the fact that Polly is dressed up as a mermaid (♥ The Underwater Menace!). I really love Polly's combination of kindness and practicality: she's the one everyone goes to when they need to be cheered up, but she's no pushover - when that guy gets pushy with her in the Inferno, she tells him exactly where to go. Also, she kills Cybermen with nail polish remover. What's not to love?

This is from the training montage bit in episode one. I assume our heroes were interpreting "prepare for the possibility of extreme water" or similar in their own unique ways. It sums up everything I liked about The Middleman and its charming oddity, plus I really like how the background works with tiny!Wendy and tiny!Middleman. I've been rewatching The Middleman recently at Stitch 'n' Witch (for, what, the fourth time? It is still so funny!), and it's only made me sad all over again that it got cancelled.

[keywords: worrals]
The Worrals books are a series of eleven books by W.E. Johns (creator of Biggles) about Flight Officer Joan Worralson, her sidekick Frecks, her friend Bill and their adventures flying planes during and after the Second World War. I LOVE THEM. They are possibly not the best written books ever, but they have a sort of breathless charm, and the characters are just wonderful. I made this icon a while ago (after googling "Worrals" and trying to icon all the pictures that came up); it's a little more glamorous than I imagine Worrals being, but nevertheless I am v. fond of it. (Though the text is wrong! I thought I checked it, but maybe not. Will fix.)

Me neither - I have to force myself to be very selective.

It gets better and better as it goes along! How far into it are you?

Date: 14 Jun 2010 21:13 (UTC)Embarrassingly I've only seen the pilot episode of The Middleman but I was rather taken but what little I've seen of it. It had rather pleasant Avengersish overtones which always endears me.

Date: 14 Jun 2010 15:18 (UTC)I'm waiting on the first season of The Wire, thanks to loving Idris Elba in Luther for the last six weeks... I've literally just started re-watching Blake's 7 - which I barely remember from ye olde days! (:D) - and I've just begun a rewatch of the first two seasons of Law & Order: UK. Oh! And I've got the first season of Murdoch Mysteries awaiting my attention! THIS on top of writing a novel, and doing a day job. I say we steal Martha's phone and call up the Doctor+TARDIS! :D
Also Radio 7 is fun - did you catch the Blake's 7 "Early Years" audios they did oh-so-recently??

It's really good (and Idris Elba is fantastic in it) - the last few episodes of the first season in particular gripped me completely.

Sounds like a plan! :)

No, annoyingly I missed them. Hopefully they'll be on again, preferrably in the winter when I've got a good excuse to stay curled up indoors with the iplayer!

Hee! The library, unfortunately, has only 4 copies, and a waiting list of 8 people ahead of me - but I'll get it eventually!
Sounds like a plan! :)

Oh shame! Let's hope they do air them again - I enjoyed them - they made the perfect prelude, actually, to watching B7 from the beginning after such a long gap!

Date: 14 Jun 2010 20:45 (UTC)Any ep by dickhead Steed is bad. There's only one more next season; why the hell did he do more than one? Do watch the current ep, 'Death-Watch' though. It's a good one, and very cool SF for its day. The next one's very good too. It was meant to be the last and I think it should have been.
I adored Biggles book when I was a kid, especially the WW1 ones which I regarded as the best lot with jolly japes against the German like dropping boots and whistling bottles on each other's airfields. I still remember the outrage when one of them (Algy or Ginger) lost a goldfish in an air raid. But I only found out about Worrals in the last year or so. Since I wanted nothing more than to be a pilot back then, I am sad that I never read them. Our library can't have had any as I'd have snapped them up. I'll have to see if they have them now, though I won't hold my breath. [uses icon of me in flying helmet]

He wrote another one? Woe, I thought it was just the two we've already had.

Yay! I'm looking forward to that one.

No, none of my local libraries have them either - they're long out of print! I've only read four of them, all of which I've picked up from ebay. It's a shame: they're really fun, and I'm sure I would've also loved them when I was little. I haven't read any Biggles, though; I'm a little daunted by how many there are!

Date: 15 Jun 2010 11:48 (UTC)I look forward to your comments on "Death Watch".
Just start off with the WW1 ones. They were my favourites. :-) Then the WW2 ones; don't bother with the non-war stuff.

Shiny! I shall look out for them. They turn up much more often in libraries and charity shops than the Worrals ones do!
