DW: Vampires of Venice
Sunday, 9 May 2010 13:43I enjoyed this one while I was watching it, despite a few problems I had with it, but it turns out that they were the sort of problems that get worse the more you think about them. So not entirely squeeful, this post, although I did like the episode a whole lot.
- Really not happy with the fact that both black characters died (again!). And I would also have liked a little more time to be spent acknowledging their deaths, Guido especially - at least Isabella had that moment with Guido standing at the bottom of the steps looking bereft in Rory's silly t-shirt, and Eleven's confrontation with Rosanna.
- I was also not desperately keen on the way Eleven and Amy excluded Rory from time to time (shades of the way Ten and Rose treated Mickey, which I also hated), and the "you could pretend to be my brother!" scene was particularly off (though "You look about nine!" was lolsome, as was Rory sidling away from the gunpowder barrels). But I think they pulled it back with the final scene ("we're not her boys."/"yes, we are."/"...yeah, we are.") and the rest of their dynamic was very nice (and OT3-tastic), so I am hopeful.
- I did love Amy kissing Rory on the stairs. I feel like between her pre-wedding jitters and the excitement of travelling with the Doctor, Amy had rather lost sight of the fact that she does love Rory (and I think she does), and that moment was when she remembered again.
- FISH FROM SPACE.
- "I thought I'd burst out of the wrong cake. Again." HEE. That entire scene was hilarious and made me ADORE Eleven. Just... his face! The way he kept saying exactly the wrong thing! ♥
- Amy's outift was gorgeous. Also, SO MUCH LOVE for Rory's t-shirt!
- "I'm a gondola... driver." Oh Rory. So many good lines in this one, should've written them down rather than, say, forgetting them.
- "I'm from OFSTED!" AMY ♥
- Uh-oh, looming spectre of Time War angst, DNW. Though I was pleased that Eleven would've been willing to help the fish-people if their plan didn't involve so much killing people, or if they'd shown more remorse for the people they'd killed.
- Fencing with a broom! Rory and Amy versus creepy vampire boy was a great sequence.
- I love the fact that Rory read up on things after "The Eleventh Hour"! And was not impressed by the TARDIS being bigger on the inside, hee.
- So overall, for all I was a bit :/ on various elements of this one, I did enjoy it a great deal, and am pretty optimistic for the rest of the season. (We're nearly halfway through already! Goodness.)

Date: 9 May 2010 18:42 (UTC)I sort of feel like this was intentional? I mean, it's really wanky of me to go around saying that Moffat is trying to redo all the bits Rusty got wrong, but a whole lot of this season really does feel like he's going "this is what you expect from this show... BUT here's how we're doing it now." I think because he keeps starting in similar places and then going in completely different directions with it. (I feel the same way about the Time War angst, actually- ie Eleven telling Roseanna that she needed to mourn and get past it like he had.)

Date: 9 May 2010 19:46 (UTC)I think you might be right about what Moffat's doing (whether it's what he's meaning to do or not!) - the final scene certainly suggests that things are going to be better this time. I hope so, anyway! I'm just...extra twitchy, I suppose, because it makes me go "oh no, not again" for a moment, even if in the end it turns out that actually, no they're not going there again. Does that make sense? I'm kind of afraid that all the things I didn't like about the RTD era (constant Time War angst, companion hierarchies etc) are still going to be there, even though I'm also hopeful that they won't, and raising them again, even if it's to dismiss them, makes me a little more nervous than I would otherwise be!
(I need a Rory icon...)

Yeah. You'd think by now someone would have noticed and done something about it.
