"Hold on tight, we're bringing down the government."
Friday, 16 April 2010 08:56Have been busy trying to catch up on all the TV I've missed recently. Last night I watched "The Beast Below". In retrospect I don't think this was a particularly good episode, but at the time I was too busy drawing hearts around Amy to notice. I LOVE HER SO MUCH. And Karen Gillan is really good - I couldn't take my eyes off her in the scene where she's watching the video. Going back to the episode itself, it seemed like a collection of good scenes that didn't actually add up to much. Having the Demon Headmaster feed dissidents and underachieving children to the Space Whale was overkill, I thought: we didn't need the extra "this society is rly rly bad" anvil, and it leaves a massive loose end hanging. The bit with the Doctor and Amy in the whale's mouth was great, though, tons of fun. Also, I was a bit !!! at the idea that the Space Whale would basically go "ok, they've tortured me for three hundred odd years, but never mind, they've stopped now." Other bits and pieces:
Catching up on TV has been made a little easier by the fact that I read some spoilers for Flashforward, went OH FLASHFORWARD NO and have decided not to watch anymore, on the grounds that if I don't watch then I can pretend that [spoilery thing] never happened.
Why is Have I Got News For You on Thursdays now? This is very confusing and I always miss it. At least it doesn't clash with Ashes to Ashes, I suppose. (This week's was great! I have no thoughts on it, but it was v. good.)
- THE HUG. I loved it so much, because the conflict between the Doctor and Amy had been so real, and their affection felt so genuine. ♥
- Lack of Gallifrey angst! Yessss. Also, the conversation where Amy asks the Doctor if he'd ever run away from anything. I am not entirely sold on Eleven yet but he had some lovely moments this episode.
- Amy saving the day! Have I mentioned that I love her? I also really liked the Doctor pointing out that she might have killed everyone - for all she was right, I think it's good that he's not letting her lose sight of what the stakes were.
- Liz X was brill! I do not place too much stock in her "abdication": that button was clearly only marked "abdicate" because "free the Space Whale, thus condemning self and subjects to horrible flamey death, resulting in self no longer being queen due to aforementioned horrible flamey death of self and subjects" wouldn't fit.
- "Very old, and very kind." YES.
- I loved all the grubby Fifties spaceship background stuff. It reminded me a little of Neverwhere a few times, actually.
