"I write all the letters, Nicholas."
Monday, 28 July 2008 18:50Just a Minute is back (hurray!), tonight's edition was rather good, I recommend it. BBC Fight Club, indeed. I have listened to quite a lot of radio 4 this weekend (even more than usual), this mostly involved shouting at the nutters phoning in on Any Answers (Islamism? Seriously? That's not even a word!). Now I am listening to something about Delia Derbyshire from Woman's Hour (thanks for reminding me about it,
the_smut_fairy). She was way ahead of her time and I find the fact that she was doing it all by hand with bits of tape absolutely fascinating - very raw sounds, as opposed to the cleaner sounds you get from a modern synthesiser. (The article that goes with the programme says that she got a bit bored and gave up when they came along, as it was all a bit too easy.)
University Challenge last week was a bit depressing as my ex-university (Durham) was comprehensively flattened. I have no personal stake in it today so hopef. it will be better.
This weekend I have been failing at things. I have been trying to make Isabella (from Knitty) for several months and have just had to pull it all out and start again for the second time. I really want to make it, but have put it to one side for the moment and am instead working on a felted bag from the first Stitch 'n' Bitch book. Have never felted anything before so that should be fun. Also on Saturday I tried to mow the lawn with varying degrees of success, using my dad's old mechanical lawnmower. We're not sure how old this is, he bought it from a church garden party under the aegis of the previous rector (so anything between about six and fourteen years ago), and it is a little tricksy. It will go forward and cut for a few inches, then you have to pull it back and try again, and sometimes it randomly gets stuck and won't do anything at all until you pick it up and move it to another part of the lawn. Jury is still out on whether this is more or less work than cutting the grass by hand with shears like I did last time. Oh my life is so fascinating. *facepalm*
