Sea Devils
Sunday, 17 February 2008 22:27I have just watched The Sea Devils and it was well good. Here are some reasons why.
- JO JO JO JO JO. Onna motorbike, beating up guards (YAY), crawling through ventilation shafts, rescuing the Doctor and generally being all intrepid and awesome and Girl Adventurer-y.
- The Doctor's outfit! I am very fond of a cape (I saw someone wearing one to Sainsbury's today) and the jacket he had on underneath was rather fab too.
- Great minor characters. Blythe radiating "unimpressed" at the Private Secretary (whose name escapes me). The sheer odiousness of the private secretary himself, the way he could order the destruction of the Sea Devils and anyone standing between him and them and then demand more toast in the same breath. The sailors in the submarine were particularly good too, though I did giggle a bit at the captain's non-regulation seventies hair.
- MINI SPEEDBOAT CHASE YAY YAY. Swiftly followed by reversing the polarity of the neutron flow, heh.
- The interactions between the Doctor and the Master, unfailingly polite even when threatening each other. Also, sword fight!
- I love these long stories. They have so much more time for character interaction and world building and all that stuff. This I think is why I prefer tv to films* on the whole, and tv that takes things slowly at that.
- Oh, that scene where Jo and the Doctor were signalling at each other through the window and her little wave when she got into the cell! My heart went all fuzzy with the cuteness. The way they work together was great - they are partners in crime (points at new icon) and it is lovely. Holding hands running down the beach! Awwwwww.
- One more thing: why did all the guards in the Master's prison have berets, cloaks and moustaches? It was very odd.
-------
*I have only seen one film this year, the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It was only technically this year (just after midnight on New Year's Eve) and I'd seen it before. It was worse than I remember it being, or possibly I am more grumpy. Mos Def was still great though.

Seriously? This alone is the reason why I love this story so much.
