Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:43So last year I decided to keep a list of all the books I read, and to write mini reviews for them. And I did it! (Let's ignore the part where I tried to do the same thing with films, shall we?) So I am hereby attempting the same thing this year.
1. Beauty by Robin McKinley Though this was good, I didn't enjoy it as much as Spindle's End, probably because it was more of a straightforward retelling. It felt a bit clunky at times, too, and the magical wish fulfilment end was a bit annoying - I think that if you're going to use magic in fiction, it needs some kind of limit on it.
2. Dr Who Short Trips: A Christmas Treasury LOVE. I giggled uncontrollably at Five, Tegan and Turlough Christmas shopping in Oxford street, and also that poem where One invites the other doctors round for a Christmas booze up and Eight tries to get off with himself and Five gets stuck with the washing up; and squeed over the Brig's recipe for brandy butter ; and had my heart warmed by UNIT Christmas parties and stuff. And I also loved the Benny story even though I didn't know the canon, and there were three fab Four 'n' Romana stories, yay!
3. Would the Vampire People Please Leave the Lobby? by Allyson Beatrice Fascinating, though the author didn't entirely endear herself to me. What was also interesting about it (as well as the content) was realising quite how much your fannish experience is defined by what you're a fan of, when you're a fan and who you are yourself.
Apologies for inarticulacy. I'm very tired...
