DW: "The Snowmen"; also the trailer
Saturday, 29 December 2012 23:41I watched "The Snowmen" earlier today and my brain wouldn't leave me alone until I posted about it, so. I really wanted to enjoy it, and there was lots I did like, but overall it left me a bit cold, alas.
- There was a lot going on, and none of it really gelled for me: there was Vastra and co, introducing Clara, her double life, whatsisname and his children, oh and the actual plot with Richard E. Grant. Those last two threads in particular were treated in a fairly perfunctory way, and I wanted more Vastra and Jenny (SO GREAT), and more Clara.
- NEW CREDITS. GIANT DOCTORFACE. YES. Ending with the TARDIS doors opening was a little cheesy, but I'm on board with the spirit of it, and I will forgive a lot for GIANT FACE ACTION.
- Clara is magnificent. I adore her.
- HOWEVER, I am sad that we are getting a modern day version of her, not Victorian Clara or far-future Oswin. Woe! (I'm also a little worried about the overarching plot, since I mostly hated how the last one turned out.)
- I do love Moffat's clever, sarcastic, adventurous heroines. But Amy was the girl who waited, and Clara looks like she might be shaping up to be the woman who died, and I like that a lot less. :(
- The new console room seems cool, though it looked a little computer generated: is it an actual built set, does anyone know? The staircase into the sky was magical.
- I could not stop rolling my eyes at the Doctor's mopeyness. Is this obligatory now? Can't we just accept that he was sad offscreen for a bit? Or better still, let's have some overlapping companions so the seemingly inevitable sads seem less manpainy. (Also the whole "Pond" thing made no sense, why would Clara choose that word? Unless this is part of the indication that there is more to her than meets the eye. *hopes* The rest of that sequence was cool, also.)
- As you know, Bob, I love a Classic Who reference, but these ones seemed a little heavy handed. I do love that the Doctor has a London Underground lunchbox, though. ♥
- "Only a whole family crying on Christmas Eve could melt away the snow!" ...um.
- The Snowmen were nicely creepy.
- ETA oh, and I really hated the memory wiping thing, thus really loved that it turned out to be a terrible idea!
Re. the trailer: ...is that more Vastra and Jenny I spy? YES PLEASE. It also looked to me like we might possibly be getting multiple versions of Clara/Oswin, maybe? Just as long as this doesn't mean she dies in every episode or anything.
I think it is now officially way past my bedtime, oops.
