here we go

Further adventures in animated DC stuff: I am about a dozen episodes into Young Justice! I like it a lot, although script wise it is... not always that great. I was antishipping Kid Flash/Artemis at bit at first because it was just so sledgehammeringly obvious (though I have changed my mind now, because I am fickle), and also because I don't really like Kid Flash all that much. Which pains me a little, because ♥Wally West♥. Artemis, though, is fantastic, especially in Homefront. It's mostly the characters I am watching for (and the pretty animation): M'gann is adorable (though I am less keen on her "Hello, M'gann!" catchphrase); Robin is tiny and hilarious, which is basically all I want in a character; I should probably find Superboy's angst less hilarious than I do, poor child. Kaldur I think suffers a bit from the writing: I think he could be a much more interesting character with more subtle writing (cf that one episode that focused on him but gave him a terribly by-the-numbers plotline D:). But I have decided that I like the character he could be, so, in conclusion, ♥Kaldur♥.
I have to say that I am glad that I knew going in that there would be some women in it eventually, because otherwise I might have been very put off by the premiere: I don't remember any women having speaking parts in it until M'gann turned up right at the end. (I know Wondy was there, but did she actually have any lines? If only my memory were better.) I am pretty excited for some of the new characters we're supposed to be getting, though! And I would like to see more of Black Canary mentoring the team, please. (Speaking of mentoring, I am very entertained by Batman's unexpected bid for father of the year. ♥)
(I've also been reading the original Young Justice comics, which I love tremendously and which really deserve a post of their own. Maybe I will get round to it eventually. For now I will just mention that I am sad that Red Tornado is not nearly as sarcastic in the cartoon as he was in the comics.)
Also, last night I watched Under the Red Hood, since it was streaming on Lovefilm, which was very good, though, probably inevitably, rather grim. And now I am shipping Dick/Jason based on actual canon, and not just on fic. :D? (I was working on the Batsymbol part of my Batgirl cardigan as I was watching this, heh.)
Oh, I forgot to talk about finishing Justice League Unlimited! ALL THE LOVE. The finale was slightly on the action-heavy side for my taste, but the very end of it was just perfect: Batman giving the villains a head start! Superman snarking about it! Wondy's "and the adventures continue" bit! ALLLL the heroes running down the steps! ♥ Going back a bit, I adored "The Great Brain Robbery", because it was hilarious. "I have no idea who this is." "I, Lex Luthor, find this preposterous." etc, and the bit at the end where the heroes ask Flash where Luthor's secret hideout is: "I don't know, in a swamp?" AHAHAHA. More generally, I also really enjoyed how the dynamic between Hawkgirl and Vixen was handled: they may have been rivals for Green Lantern, but they weren't going to let that stop them being friends and allies. ♥ And this is just a little thing, but I really loved how Black Canary's canary cry was animated: the combination of the effects and her pose really worked for me.
Picking my one comics icon for this post has reminded me that I haven't flailed properly about Batgirl vol 3 yet. IT IS SO GOOD YOU GUYS. It's basically everything I want in a comic: it's funny, it's got so much heart, and it has a really great ensemble cast including a female/female mentor/mentee relationship (MY FAVOURITE). The parallels and semi-parallels between the characters and their relationships are brilliant, too. ♥ I love all the scenes with Dick and Babs, especially when he tells her off for letting Steph go out and find crime, and she's just all "yes, it is terribly irresponsible of me to take a League of Assassins-trained ten year old out crime fighting OH WAIT THAT WAS YOU." (Sidenote: have I mentioned how much I love Damian? He is all tiny and grumpy and superior, I can relate to that.)
And it's all about hope and new chances and being who you choose to be and all that good stuff. The bit that really sums it up for me is the bit in Rising where Steph tells Damian that "I don't think you understand what Barbara and I are trying to do here. [...] There's room for hope in our line of work, too." ALL THE HEARTS. Also, earlier, Steph saying that she's "whoever I choose to be", and Babs thinking about how "every day is a new chance to make the right choices". LOVE. And the final issue just breaks my heart: Steph's mother revealing that she knows she's Batgirl, and that she's proud of her; and all the futures they'll never get to have, and how really, that's ok, because it's what we do and who we are right now that matters. I am particularly sad that we don't get the future with Nell growing up to be Batgirl, because she's adorable, and really, we could do with both more non-white superheroines, and more superheroines who were inspired by other women. The only criticism I have is "not enough Cass" (I assume there were behind the scenes reasons not to give her a big role, but she could've been mentioned more), but other than that, perfect comic is perfect.
...yeah, so, comics is my new fandom. :D? I suppose it was inevitable, given that I really like canons where there is LOTS OF CANON.
(HI. I haven't posted for ages! How are you all? I also haven't commented much recently. I blame being busy revising, but really it is due to my general failings.)
