"How many Nimons?"
Wednesday, 25 August 2010 10:50Given that the last episode of Doctor Who I watched was "Nightmare of Eden", it was fairly inevitable that I should then proceed to "The Horns of Nimon". Romana was SMASHING in this story. ♥ She basically took on the Doctor's role, saving people, working things out, shouting at people where necessary, being a meddlesome hussy... it was great. (Also her outfit was wonderful, still pictures do not do justice to it.) I loved the bit where the pilot locked her in the hold, and she just let herself straight out again, looking a little exasperated. And she built her own sonic screwdriver! (And the Doctor tried to nick it because it was better than his! ♥) In conclusion: ROMANA ROMANA ROMANA. Oh, and I was also very amused by the ending, K-9 trundling through the maze (who needs string when you've got a robot dog?) with everyone else following behind, trying desperately to look like they were hurrying without... actually hurrying. HEE.
30 days of Who: Day 25 – Favourite Who Actor
I actually love the TV Movie, but even those who don't tend to agree that Paul McGann was great in it. (/sweeping generalisation) He is just as great in the audios (Zagreus in particular): joyful and grave, frivolous and serious, sometimes both at the same time. And he's been reliably good in everything else I've seen him in too, plus I always enjoy his interviews; he always seems like he really thinks about the question, and gives the fullest, truest answer he can. (Also, I don't know if you all were aware, but I hear that this one time he hugged a Dalek.)

Ha, me too! Alas, I don't have mine on LJ any more :( But I just love how happy he looks!

Date: 25 Aug 2010 15:38 (UTC)I like The TV Movie as well. I also think alot of elements that "shocked" fans at the time are sort of passe now in the new series. In retrospect, I think it makes a good bridge from old to knew. While I like the eighth Doctor well enough, I have to confess that I want to like Paul McGann as an actor much more than I actually do.

Date: 25 Aug 2010 16:57 (UTC)I think it's a mixture of all these things (so, erm, an ironic classic that's so bad it's good at times but also really fun), which makes it seem like a total oddity. It's not like Creature which is clearly a comedy story and should be treated as such, or Nightmare which is legitimately good stuff... it's uncertain. Sorry for the mini-essay, but Horns just baffles me a bit!
But yes, Romana is utterly fab in it and she's definitely the best aspect of the serial. It's almost a Classic Who "Doctor-lite" in a way.
I also love The TV Movie! It was the first Doctor Who I ever saw when it was on BBC1 back in 1996 and is singlehandedly responsible for me being a fan. Paul McGann is utterly wonderful on TV and in the audios, and one day I hope he'll back onscreen for a multi-Doctor story.

Date: 26 Aug 2010 00:20 (UTC)I'm one of those who hates just about everything about the 1996 thing, except for McGannDoc, who was lovely. (I also like the theme music and opening credits. Hah.)

Date: 26 Aug 2010 17:08 (UTC)♥ Paul McGann is so wonderful, isn't he? You're completely right about him being good in everything he's in, despite the overall quality of the series / film. Have you by any chance seen any of Luther? His role isn't very big, but I thought he was wonderful in it.
Also, you like Zagreus and Romana and you seem awesome, do you mind if I friend you? [/random]

*nods* And so does a lot of the spin off stuff.

Date: 26 Aug 2010 18:56 (UTC)Yay, another TV Movie fan! I would be SO HAPPY to see Paul McGann in a multidoctor story - it would be great to have more TV Eight, though I do love the audios and the books. And the comics!

He really is! I saw a bit of Luther - I wasn't that keen on it, but he was great.
Hope you enjoy Nimon! Are you watching in order, or jumping about?

Date: 26 Aug 2010 19:04 (UTC)I was pleasantly surprised by Luther - the first two or so episodes didn't impress me, but the second half of the first season was pretty fantastic. IHMO, anyway. ;D
In order! My goal was to watch all of Classic Who in one year ... whether or not I'll actually accomplish that is another story. I've just gotten to Ribos Operation, so I'm a little more than halfway there.

Date: 26 Aug 2010 20:12 (UTC)I'm very much looking forward to your thoughts on season 18 as it's always been one of my favourites (actually seasons 18-21 is my favourite period of Classic Who alongside 25-26!). The crumbling fairytale kingdoms feel it's got going is gorgeous - it always makes me laugh when people say season 18 brought "hard science" back to Doctor Who when it's clearly the most fantasy-based season of the lot.
The audios, the books and the comics (so underrated, more people need to read them!) are all fantastic, yes! I love that the Eighth Doctor got so many great stories, but I still want to see him on TV again. I'm stubbornly convinced it'll happen someday.

Date: 26 Aug 2010 20:40 (UTC)Yes, it's such a rich area and they've barely touched it. Perhaps subsequent producers were put off by Underworld?
The bits of season 18 I've seen before I've liked a lot - I think Keeper of Traken is really underrated, it's one of my favourite stories.
The sheer quantity of brilliant Eighth Doctor stuff almost makes up for the lack of TV stories. But not quite.
