fannish top fives!
Monday, 10 August 2009 22:31Here be my answers to the five things meme! (Any more for any more?) Contains spoilers for: "The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse" (The Middleman),Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Spooks, DS9 and Buffy, most of which are probably common knowledge by now but better to err on the side of caution and all that. Also contains some pictures.
Some of these were v. hard. FIVE IS NOT THAT MANY :(

Your Top 5 Sixth Doctor stories (TV or non-TV!)
5. The Mark of the Rani My favourite of the TV-ones (that I've seen)! It's not perfect - the bickering at the beginning is rather nastier than I like, and it has a rather rubbish cliffhanger (this keeps happening! Come on, Six era writers, you only had to come up with one cliffhanger per story, why did you settle for "no, Peri, don't push me down the hill towards the mineshaft! ...oh, you did"?) - but it is lots of fun. The period aspects are very well done, it has some lovely silliness, and the Rani is brilliant. She's just doing her science thing, and if that means lots of people having to die, well, that's just how it goes. And the "argue, mostly" sells the affection between Six and Peri to me perfectly.
4. The Raincloud Man I love Six and Charley together, I love Menzies and I adore the Top Trumps bit ♥
3. The Year of the Pig The atmosphere is glorious. It's rich, wordy and grotesquely perfect, and I love Six and Peri complaining about A la recherche du temps perdu.
2. ...and the Pirates SONGS. The silly bits and the serious bits blend nicely. Also SONGS.
1. Jubilee Ooo, excellent, darkly comic and just great.

Your Top 5 Favourite Companions
(yes, this was the hardest one!)

5. Ace McShane
"Who are you calling small?"

4. Zoe Herriot
"Sometimes I think the Doctor might be almost as clever as I am."
3. Anji Kapoor
"Just before Fitz arrived, I was just thinking that you were a completely useless otterfuc–"
2. Fitz Kreiner
Fitz stood in the middle of the library, clutching a copy of The Tale of Peter Rabbit for moral support.

1. Martha Jones
"I promise you, Mr Smith, we will find a way out. If we can travel to the moon, then we can travel back. There's got to be a way."

Your Top 5 Favourite Big Finish audios
OK, I cheated a bit here by excluding Six, since I've talked about my favourite Six stories above, otherwise Jubilee would be on this list. So instead I picked one from each of the other Doctors, plus on Benny and one from the other spinoffs.
5. Oh No It Isn't I find it incredibly amusing that for their launch story they went for CRAZY PANTO HIJINKS. OK, they were following the Benny NAs, but the NAs had The Dying Days and all the Who NAs too.
4. The Prisoner's Dilemma I think this may be the best Companion Chronicle so far, it uses the format brilliantly and there're some fantastic images in it.
3. The Kingmaker (Honourable mentions: Singularity and Spare Parts) Because it is hilarious, plus femslashy, plus there's that nice Erimem moment which really takes advantage of the fact that she has a very different belief system to Peri (and us).
2. Caerdroia (Honourable mentions: The Next Life and Zagreus) Yes, I do prefer the funny ones, how did you guess? I really love everything about this audio.
1. The Settling It's incredibly atmospheric and just really really good.

Top Five Alternate Team TARDISes (that should have happened but didn't)
1. Four, Leela and Andred. Andred and Four had a nice dynamic going in The Invasion of Time and it would have been great to have more development for the Leela/Andred relationship too.
2. Three, Liz and Jo. I would like to see how they'd get on! I think they wouldn't be too keen on each other at first, but after a few adventures they'd have bonded. This is a bit of a cheat as it does happen in one of the PDAs, The Wages of Sin, I think, but I would like to see more!
3. Six, Peri and H.G. Wells. H.G. was just adorable in Timelash, and I think the Six 'n' Peri TARDIS could have done with a bit of his wide eyed wonder.
4. Eight, Grace and Martha. More than your RDA of doctors! Actually I would really like to see Grace and Martha working together, with Eight being all enthusiastic about how awesome they both are.
5. Romana, Martha and Benny. Romana's got a TARDIS! It counts!

Top Five Blake's 7 episodes
Possibly slightly eccentric selection since I haven't seen past "Sarcophagus" yet, also, as I started watching eight years ago (there are reasons why it has taken me so long! Some of them even make sense!), some of my memories are a little hazy.

1. The Way Back

2. Redemption

3. Gambit

4. Aftermath. O HAI DAYNA ILU. Also I like the way that things are all a bit crazy for a bit and they're not straight in there with the new status quo.

5. Rumours of Death

Top 5 fictional couples that broke up but totally shouldn't have.
I found this one really hard too!

1. Buffy and Angel. I know, I know, it was for the best, but there is a little corner of my fannish heart that is still scribbling Buffy + Angel 4 eva!!! on all the walls. Here they are having a lovely picnic inna graveyard.

2. Xander and Anya. I loved them together and would much rather have seen them work through their issues than have to watch them break up in Hell's Bells. OK, there are many things I would rather watch than Hell's Bells but my point stands.

3. Jadzia Dax and Lenara Kahn. The way the episode worked was great but I'd also have liked to have seem them as a long-term couple.

4. Lacey and the Middleman. D:

5. Ruth and Harry. Though they were never officially a couple, I still think it counts.

Date: 10 Aug 2009 23:02 (UTC)Great choice of B7 episodes (I also adore Dayna) - I have so much love for Rumours of Death, because it's so refreshingly modern and dramatic still. Which is what's great about B7, that despite some hilariously inept special effects and sets and sometimes acting, a load of the scripts could be filmed again now and you'd hardly have to change anything. It's such a wonderful contradicton of a show and I love it. And you've got some fantastic stuff coming post-Sarcophagus, although I say that as a biased season four fan, a season best described as "controversial" or "opinion-dividing".

So much yes. This was a missed opportunity, DS9 writers! I love Rejoined, although I thought it was so crammed full of delicious ideas that I felt they could've done with a much more thorough examination. A much longer storyline with Dax challenging Trill society taboos would've been cool and possibly facing exile because of her relationship would've been very cool, I think.

Date: 11 Aug 2009 04:43 (UTC)I clearly need to see 'The Mark of Rani' - several people have raved about it for one reason or another of late...
I'm totally with you on The Raincloud Man and Jubilee (I want to marry Rob Shearman and have his fic babies! *blushes*).
'Wages of Sin' was rather disappointing since it split up Liz and Jo (and Three) so that we didn't get a vast amount of interaction between the two women, sadly.
4. Eight, Grace and Martha. More than your RDA of doctors! Actually I would really like to see Grace and Martha working together, with Eight being all enthusiastic about how awesome they both are.

Yes, YES!!!! I totally agree with you on both of those!
Harry and Ruth 4 eva!!

Yes! Well handled, it would've been fantastic. I'd've loved to have seen it.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the book but would've loved some more Liz and Jo scenes!
