How is it still only Tuesday? Surely it must be Thursday by now? Nope, still Tuesday, cold, rainy, YARGH. Oh well, when I get home I shall console myself with the gooseberry mallow ice cream I made at the weekend, and also my NEW OBSESSION, ie Press Gang. I dimly recall it being on when I was little, but I was a bit too young for it and also it clashed with something good on t'BBC (us didn't have VCRs in them days, and even if we did we'd've probably had to crank them by hand, uphill both ways in the snow usw.), so I never really watched it. But I wandered past a charity shop on Saturday evening (on a quest for spinach and sponges), noticed they had the complete series on DVD for a tenner, and carried it off at once. (I did stop and pay for it first. Just to clarify.) And now I cannot stop watching it. I even considered nipping home at lunchtime and trying to squeeze in another episode, but see above re. rain. Anyway the point of all this wittering is that I love it tremendously, it is witty and snarky and affectionate and although it does occasionally wobble into kid's show worthiness (in a "hello, here is our episode about [insert teen issue here]!" kind of way), I don't mind, due to LOVE and also the fact that they have been pretty well done so far. I would probably have more to say about it if I hadn't inhaled the first season and a half (so far) quite so fast, but really that just means I have an excuse to watch it again. Here are some more, slightly spoilery thoughts:
- Lynda/Spike! I LOVE THEM. I wasn't sure at first but then there was BICKERING and MONOPOLY and I was entirely sold.
- DID I MENTION THE BICKERING? All the dialogue sparkles beautifully, not just between Lynda and Spike, but the whole cast. I would quote some bits but I'm not sure I could resist quoting the whole thing.
- I really like Mr. Sullivan. All the adults are pretty good, and it's nice to see them being broadly supportive whilst leaving the kids to get on with it, rather than antagonistic.
- Hi Angela Bruce! I really like her character, well, I really like them all, but her in particular. I also liked the fact that she messed up when talking to Billy, he told her off for it and she apologised, without making a big thing of it or turning her into a bad person - she's a good person who made a mistake.
- The running jokes about Frazz doing the horoscopes makes me grin, especially that one where he gets them all completely right.
