DW: Destiny of the Daleks
Thursday, 10 June 2010 13:17- "One for casual, one for best." ♥ ♥! I had seen this on icons and such but hadn't realised it was an actual line! I also love how casual Romana was at this point, especially compared to her reaction to being interrogated by the Daleks. (About Time theorises that she was trying to fool the lie detector, and succeeding, since it says she's telling the truth when she says she knows nothing about the Daleks, though later it turns out that she does.)
- There seemed to be lots of women and non-white actors in this, hurray! Unfortunately they were all playing evil robots or background type people, boo. Actually, I was a little surprised that the people Romana meets in the mine weren't more important to the story.
- I loved the Doctor and Romana discussing their escape plan under the cover of scissors paper stone. And the idea that two completely logical races would hit stalemate very quickly was good, though I am a little surprised that neither of them had managed to invent a random action generator. Even my calculator has a random number generator! Also, the big flaw in their plan: an illogical move might be a stroke of genius, but it could just as easily be a terrible mistake. I'm not sure I quite buy the Doctor beating the Movellans every single move!
- The Doctor describing the Movellans as just another race of robots, like the Daleks, struck me as somewhat out of character. It was a bit of a narrowminded thing to say: surely there are some nice robots out there?
- Excellent use of the BBC quarry, I thought. It looked really good.
- Also looking good: the Dalek base set. All those angles and reflections gave some lovely shots.
- On the same subject: there were some beautiful shots of Romana, especially in the mine in part one. She's so elfin! ♥
- And of course I loved her dressing up as the Doctor! And her pink version of the Doctor's outfit! Brilliant.

Date: 10 Jun 2010 13:17 (UTC)I recently watched this episode and was struck by that line too. First because, really? Calling them just like the Daleks just because they're robots? That hardly seems fair. Though in the episode it works, I guess. But yeah, there are nice robots too, Doctor! Let's not go judging everybody because the Daleks suck!

Date: 10 Jun 2010 14:16 (UTC)I'm not too keen on this story, I must admit. It's the only one from season 17 I don't care for, I find it a real chore. Davros is so, so bad in it. But it's not a complete loss - I also love Romana's costume, there's the legendary "spack off!" and "Davros, you don't look a day older and I hoped you were dead" never fails to make me laugh.
Lovely City of Death next!

Date: 10 Jun 2010 21:02 (UTC)...so it could! See, this is what happens when you ditch the opposable thumb.
there's the legendary "spack off!"
I knew there was something I'd forgotten to mention! Made me laugh out loud - I'd forgotten it was in this story.
Lovely City of Death next!
Yay, yes!

Date: 11 Jun 2010 02:05 (UTC)I def love that line and how casual she is. Does she defo know about Daleks at this point though? I actually don't know/remember. (*gasp! Bad fan!) Cuz I also actually remember liking that she was genuinely afraid.
Have to say, I mostly love this story for the Doctor & Romana and their interactions. ;D

Date: 11 Jun 2010 21:57 (UTC)About Time says she knows "the basics of their history", but I can't quite remember either, despite having seen it all of three days ago! *headdesk* I like the idea that she's playing up her fear to fool the polygraph and to make herself seem less of a threat to them, though I'm sure it's at least a little bit true fear.

Hee! They are fab.
