"...nice hat."
Sunday, 25 April 2010 21:09My parents came to visit me today and asked me several times if I feel more responsible now that I am officially no longer a Youth (answer: no), but they also brought presents and daffodils and cake, so it was all good. We went to Brown's for lunch and I had a delicious bit of venison, yum yum yum. Then we came back and played Trivial Pursuits. Excellent.
This evening I watched DS9's "The Way of the Warrior". It is a cracking season opener, and for all it's full of action and drama, it's basically character led: so many of its scenes are just two people talking to each other about stuff. I loved that! More specific thoughts:

- I really liked the Kassidy/Sisko scene, they could so easily have gone for "woe, Sisko's woman doesn't understand that he has to do Important Man Things", but they didn't, because that would have been silly: Kassidy's disappointed, certainly, but she's a captain too and she understands that sometimes one just has to go and do captainy things, there's no helping it.
- Obviously I loved all the Kira and Dax bits. Dax made Kira a mostly naked man! And a silly hat! And Kira punched Lancelot! ♥
- The scenes with O'Brien and Worf are pitched very well, nicely acknowledging that they weren't really more than acquaintances on the Enterprise.
- Avery Brooks' delivery of "Battle stations" is perfect - it's just two words, but they're full of meaning.
- The scene between Bashir and Odo is lovely, and it gets a great payoff, as well as echoing the "You're dead."/"So is Doctor Bashir." exchange from the beginning.
- I also loved Garak and Dukat bloodstained and mid-fight but still managing to snark at each other.
- It's the beginning of the year and they've got lots of money to play with. Thus: SPACE BATTLES.
- "They broke seven of your transverse ribs and fractured your clavicle."/"Ah, but I got off several cutting remarks which no doubt did serious damage to their egos." I went :D at that exchange so many times in Quotable Star Trek before I even got to hear it properly. NOSTALGIA.
- Garak and Quark moaning about the Federation: WIN.
