"Pin it, Blondie!"
Time Reef/Perfect World: well done Big Finish, that's more like it! Very enjoyable, though I think it could have done with one more group stuck on the Time Reef to make it a triangle between the crew of the Gamma, Lady V and a third element, with the TARDIS crew shuttling between them and the Rook overhead. But other than that, very good: I loved the weirdness of the Reef, all the faux-Greek myth bits and the bonus Flying Dutchman allusions. And whenever someone talked about the "night-winged Rook" it made me think of that creepy Macbeth line: "Light thickens / And the crow makes wing to the rooky wood". I don't know if that was on purpose but it certainly added to the atmosphere. And speaking of creepy, that poor hero-in-training trapped in his last moment at the top of the bubble! (It's a shame that Silence in the Library did something similar, but still.)
In character terms, there was a great balance between Five's (entirely justified) anger at Brewster and the fact that his instinct was nevertheless to look after him, check he was ok and involve him in his plans. I also liked the idea of Brewster knocking around the universe, selling off bits of the TARDIS with no real idea of whether they're important bits or just decoration. Though, did they ever explain how he got the Gamma trapped on the Time Reef? Hmm, must listen again. Which I wanted to do anyway!
Perfect World was excellent. That's two very good one-parters in a row, hurrah! I was sad to say goodbye to Brewster at the end - I'd really got to like him - but it did make sense. I loved Five's speech about how being human means making mistakes. Connie was a nice character, very well developed given how little airtime she had. And the plumbers made me giggle.
The extras were spiffy too - Sean Biggerstaff on Harry Potter fanmail, Peter Davison on being whether Time Reef was a story they would have done on tv: "...we wouldn't have done it very well."
Now, SJA! "Day of the Clown, pt 1" was less immediately yayful than "The Last Sontaran" but I did enjoy it muchly. Thoughts!
- I am not actually scared of clowns so some of the "oh no, a terrifying clown!" bits fell a little flat. But they did lead to the Heat bit and that moment with Clyde and Sarah Jane grinning at each other so that is yay.
- I loved Rani immediately, she is fab. I like her family too and not just because her mother is Constable Habib (though that is awesome). I was very amused by how they were obviously setting us up to think that Mr Chandra was the villain and the contrast between how he acted in headmaster mode and how Rani and Mrs Chandra teased him was good.
- "I tell jokes, not lies." That is such a great line for Clyde.
- Reserving judgement on Sarah Jane and Luke being slightly cold to Rani, because that's how Sarah Jane was with Maria at first too. Also I think the dialogue between Rani and Luke was meant to imply that when he said it wouldn't be the same, he meant because she's not involved in the adventuring. And different doesn't have to mean worse.
Those are my thoughts.

Oh yes, lots of scared children all over the country, heh. Carrying on Doctor Who's proud tradition :)

I find it hilarious that a show that is meant for children scares me more than shows for adults do. *g*
And yeah, I rather like Rani. :D
And eeee, CLYDE. :D He is made of such win. :DDDDD
