almost entirely about superheroes

I have flu and it's terrible. I'm exhausted and I can't stop coughing and it's been going on for OVER A WEEK and I'm so annoyed, I've never been ill for this long before. (Maybe when I had mumps? But I was really little then and I don't remember.) Ugh. Anyway, since I don't have the brain for my monthly books and comics post yet, here are some other things.

Comixology is having another Convergence sale this week! Still no Cass!Batgirl issues, boo, but there's some other good stuff in there. All the Batwoman issues of Detective Comics are on sale - that's the seven that were published as Batwoman: Elegy, plus three more - and they're definitely worth a read, if anyone hasn't done so already. Also there's The Hunt For Oracle (Nightwing 41-46, Birds of Prey 20-21), which features the first in person meeting between Babs and Dinah, yesssss. And Nightwing: Year One (Nightwing 101-106), which I mostly really liked, apart from the bit where it tries to retcon in a Babs-Dick-Kory love triangle, which makes no one look good. (This is one of the main reasons why I'm not keen on Babs/Dick - the way I've seen it get retconned into their past at Kory's expense.)

Also I saw Avengers: Age of Ultron (like a week and a half ago now) and LOVED it. Not unreservedly, but enough to make me just really really happy. :D Here is a list of things I liked about it:

- NATASHA, oh my goodness I loved her stuff so much. ♥ I am not that into Natasha/Bruce,I must admit (Natasha related hetships are just not really my thing), but the film sold me on it so much more than I was expecting. :D I really liked that she got to be proactive, that she got to go to Bruce and say, "look, this is how I feel, this is what I want, how do you feel about that?" And also, she chooses to be a hero, despite the personal cost, and she got to fight with Steve's shield, launching a million headcanons for me about them practicing with it together, and I loved how well she got on with Clint's family, and just ♥ ♥ ♥

- WANDA. About an hour or so in I suddenly went, "wow, I love her, I REALLY love her". :D I was worried that she would be at the mercy of her powers, of circumstance, of other people, but NOPE, she was totally in control of herself and her life and her decisions. She made the best decisions she could with the knowledge she had (seventeen points to the film for having Steve point that out, even when they were still enemies), and when she realised she was wrong, she changed. ♥ I also really appreciated that neither the film nor the characters blamed her for going after Ultron when Pietro died, even though technically it did let one of the Ultronbots get to the technothingy - she still got her cool moment of tearing out Ultron's heart, and everyone else just reacts like, well, one of them was going to get through eventually, let's get on with the next phase of the plan. Like, it doesn't even occur to anyone to blame her and I loved it.

- NEW AVENGERS, YES, BRING ME ALL THE FICS ABOUT THIS TEAM PLEASE. Steve and Nat working together to lead and train them (and having their own private jokes and pretending to roll their eyes at the newbies and basically being BFF, I ADORE their friendship), Nat awkwardly but sincerely mentoring Wanda, Steve and Sam flirting like ALL THE TIME, Rhodey regaling them all with stories of all the terrible things Tony has done, I WANT IT ALL.

- HI MARIA. I wanted more Maria but then I always do, and I really enjoyed her role here. She's basically their Oracle and it's great.

- I was so worried that Helen Cho was going to die and she DIDN'T and it was great. And she got to be clever and brave and sarcastic and also a bit into Thor and I want to see more of her, yes.

- AVENGERS WORKING AS A TEAM, YESSSSSS. That opening sequence was so good for that. I wasn't entirely convinced by Steve's "language" line, but I can totally headcanon it into working, and the way it became a running joke was so glorious and happy-making that I didn't mind.

- The "my girlfriend is better" conversation. :DDDDDD I mean, obviously I would have preferred to have actually seen Pepper and Jane, and for them to have stuff to do in the film, but this was an awesome second best. I love that the MCU is set up so that it's totally plausible that they'd have more important things to do than go to a party just because their boyfriends saved the world. I mean, again, it's second best to having more primary female characters, but a REALLY GOOD second best.

- Relatedly, I was a little sad that Thor went to Selvig for help, not Jane, but on reflection he was looking for more mythological help than pure science, and my v. shaky memory suggests that Selvig might actually be the better choice for that? Also I do like that they're friends. Fictional people being friends is my favourite.

- I really loved everything Thor got to do in the film, actually. He didn't have a huge role, but he had a good one, and I'll take that. I also loved his camaraderie with Steve (I ship it); again, only little moments, but lovely ones.

- Speaking of shipping Steve with people, hi Sam! :D I just love their relationship and it's... sincerity, I suppose? They just really care about each other. (I was a little sad not to see Sam in the final battle along with Rhodey. Oh well. He's an Avenger now :DDDD)

- OF COURSE NICK FURY HAD A HELICARRIER STASHED AWAY SOMEWHERE. ♥ And of course that guy from CATWS is there on the flight deck. ♥ That was a really great shorthand for reinforcing the fact that these are the ex-SHIELD people we can trust.

- It was so funny! Jokes are basically the way to my heart, I can't lie. I spent so much of the running time just clutching my heart in delight. :D

- Well this is a lot more than I thought I had to say, and I still think I've forgotten stuff. I just really loved it!

And now I am out of brain and need to go and have a lie down.
