I didn't entirely believe it would actually happen? I mean, we know DC has no problem with pulling Steph from things at the last minute, but NOT THIS TIME. THERE SHE IS. IN THE BEAUTIFULLY DRAWN FLESH. And with a non-terrible costume redesign, no less, which is surely a first for the New 52.
I DON'T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THIS. STEPH. ALSO BATMAN #28 WAS PRETTY GOOD. BUT DCNU.
ALSO HOW COOL IS HARPER? I was deliberately not getting invested in her, because if there's one thing I've learnt from the reboot it's that cool young Bat-adjacent women are basically disposable, but I think that that resolution's been blown out of the water. (I am shipping her and Steph on general principles.) Also, that bit about Batman's sidekicks having trained her! :D ...I am not sure if I want that to have been Babs or not. In principle I am all "yay women training each other!" but in practice I cannot read stuff with Babsgirl in, so. (I'm also glad that Harper has a superhero identity that isn't Nightwing, because I was feeling really conflicted about that possibility.)
So as you know Bob, I am not a fan of the New 52 at all*, and specifically I hate what's been done to the Batfamily in it, but... Steph returning, Harper having a solid role, these things are inching it closer to a universe I could enjoy again. Bring back Cass, Oracle, Renee, Helena B and Damian, and reretcon all the boy Robins' origins back to the way they were, and then... well, it would still probably be only a second best universe, but it would be one I'd want to read about.
*I'm not sure if I've actually said this here, but I probably should: my feelings on the New 52 are very influenced by the fact that it hit about six months after I got into comics, and almost everything I'd loved in those six months was either gone (Oracle and the Birds of Prey, Cass and Steph, Secret Six) or had been changed for the worse (the Batfamily, Wonder Woman's origins). So it's hard for me to be completely objective about it.
I want to know who that was in the cave! I'm thinking either Cullen or Tim. I'm v. resistant to the idea of someone not-Babs being Oracle, but having someone in a co-ordination and communications role for the Batfamily could be fun.
And Selina! What's going on with her? ...this comic has really done its job of whetting my appetite for Batman Eternal. I wasn't planning to buy it, because DC, and also there is going to be a lot of it, but now... I don't know. COMICS.
Also Bruce was there too I guess.
