vids and comics

- Vid rec: Alive by [personal profile] fly_to_dawn: awesome celebration of Primeval's Emily Merchant: time traveller, dinosaur fighter, all round amazing person. :D

- Speaking of vids, I am sort of after your help with my fictional female scientists one again, o lovely flist! As I mentioned last time, I was thinking about including Buffy disguising herself as a scientist, mostly because I love Buffy tremendously. And then I thought, well, Rose disguises herself as a scientist too: maybe if I can think of one or two more, it could be A Thing and not just Me Cheating. :D? The problem of course is that I can't think of any more. (I could've sworn that Sydney Bristow sneaked into somewhere dressed as a scientist, but I found this gallery of her aliases and it doesn't look like it.) Does anyone have any suggestions?

- Lately I have been reading a lot of comics! The medium still hasn't quite clicked for me, but I have been enjoying them all the same. Here is some incoherent squeeing some of the things I have been reading:

  • Secret Six (up to "Depths"). SO AWESOME. I wasn't entirely sure about "Six Degrees of Devastation", but "Unhinged" and "Depths" I loved. They both made me flaily with glee and distress in more or less equal measures (Ragdoll's dream in "Depths" made me howl with laughter), and I really love the way they're getting into themes of good versus evil, loyalty, love and so on. Particularly great: the contrast between Scandal and Wonder Woman (more on her later) - they're both trying to do the right thing, as they see it, but they have different views on where to draw the line.

  • Birds of Prey (up to "Club Kids"). I've actually been reading this for a while and really enjoying it. "Club Kids" itself suffered a bit from being a mishmash of other storylines (including one issue that actually happens after the next collected edition, which is just GRATUITOUSLY confusing, there), but it's always fun to spend time with Barbara, Helena, Dinah, and everyone else (NO BIG BARDA NO D:). "Dead of Winter" I loved a whole lot, and not just because the Secret Six appeared. Though Catman accidentally licking Helena was hilarious. As was her throwing a meatball at him. ♥ I was so delighted by that double page spread with all of Barbara's allies turning out to support her! AND THEN I TURNED THE PAGE AND IT CARRIED ON, AND ALSO THERE WAS DINAH. YAY!

  • Batgirl ("Kicking Assassins" and "Silent Running"). Cass Cain: so great. That is something I need to state for the record. I really liked seeing her settling into Bludhaven and beginning to make friends (though having read the wikipedia page I am basically D: about what is going to happen later), and there was this one panel where she's standing there, in the cowl, waiting for the bad guys, which was entirely awesome. The I went back and read her first book and it was great and had unexpected Oracle! Hurray! Though it did also make me hate Batman again a little, when he decided that Cass was not worthy of being a batperson. FROWN.

  • Wonder Woman: "The Circle". I LOVE WONDER WOMAN SO MUCH. SO SO MUCH. Er, there was probably other stuff going on in this one but all I can focus on is the amazingness of Wonder Woman. Fairly early on she tells someone that "I know exactly who I am. Vengeance is for those who do not": that is my kind of hero. ♥ I love that she's always trying to make peace and save lives rather than take them, and that she's not too proud to beg for help when she needs it. I JUST LOVE HER A WHOLE LOT.

Now I need to make some Wonder Woman icons before I take "The Circle" back to the library. And also decide whether I'm going to ILL the next Batgirl, Secret Six and Wonder Woman books, since my library doesn't have them, or buy them and then resell them on Amazon. Decisions, decisions.
